Ramsgate FC has opened its doors to the local community in a bid to provide local youngsters the opportunity to gain a range of qualifications. The Club has teamed up with Luis Michael Training to run a Sports Apprentice scheme at Southwood starting on Monday 6th September, which gives students the chance to obtain an NVQ Level 2 in Sports Recreation and Allied Occupations and be paid at least £95 per week after the work trial.
The course is open to students aged 16-18 who are not in full time education and will run for approximately 20 weeks at 18 hours per week. This will comprise one 6 hour day of football coaching and classroom-based exercises, and 12 hours football-related vocational training at the Club at other times during the week most likely to be one morning per week.
The course is free of charge and, in addition to the NVQ, students will obtain a further 6 qualifications in subjects ranging from child welfare/safeguarding to health & safety/first aid and communications (further details on the attached Fact Sheet).
Luis Michael is a sports-based training organisation run by ex-professional footballers and sportsmen who are there to support students in obtaining their apprenticeship. They already run apprenticeship schemes at a number of professional clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday (whose successful apprentices are pictured above), Portsmouth, Nottingham Forest, Watford, Bournemouth, Millwall and many more. The scheme at Ramsgate is being led by former professional and international goalkeeper Neville Southall, who says “Apprenticeships are a wonderful opportunity for young people to progress their career and I have no reservations in strongly recommending an Apprenticeship to anyone in the sport and leisure industry.”
Enrolment took place last Monday (6th Sept) at the Club but the scheme has been structured as a rolling-programme so apprentices can join at any time. An Application Form can be downloaded here, as well as a Factsheet and FAQs.
