Rams 2 Godalming 2

Published on December 6, 2011.

Tonight the Rams welcome Godalming Town to a crisp Southwood for this re-arranged Ryman League fixture, and with the Gs 2 places and 2 points above the Rams, the game was destined to be a close-run event.

The Rams were the first to strike when, 6 minutes in, Ian Pulman broke down the right before cutting inside between two defenders before pasing two more before getting his shot off, and although it was blocked it fell to James Gregory on the edge of the area who rifled it home. The Rams extended their lead 10 minutes later when Simon Pettit managed to turn the ball into the net from a goalmouth melee, and although a defender hoofed it out the linesman flagged that it had crossed the line. In the 21st minute a great ball released Darren Wheeler on the right, who beat the offside trap and closed in on the near post with Steve O’Brien blocking his path, and while the Rams’ left back did his best to block the shot, a nice nutmeg opened the Gs’ account.

In the 2nd half the visitors pushed hard for an equaliser, and although Wheeler was a constant threat, their long ball game was well absorbed by the Rams’ defence. Wheeler nearly levelled the scores in the 65th minute, when he received the ball in the box with only Danny Twyman to beat, however the big ‘keeper reacted well at point blank range to deny him. The equaliser came 11 minutes later however, when Wheeler outpaced the Rams down the left flank and crossed the ball to the centre, where Dan Read ran onto it to fire past Twyman. The introduction of Joe Taylor and then Paul Axon freshened the Rams’ attack and saw them finish strongly, but the points were shared.
