Footballing legend Tommy Docherty was in fine form at The Clubhouse last night, and the customary wit and famous one liners were in abundance during an eveing of fascinating stories, and a Q&A session that ran well over time in which he showed he was still up-to-date with everything happening in the beautiful game.
In the first venture of its kind after refurbishing and enlarging the function area in the Clubhouse, the evening was a great success paving the way for more functions of this type. Commercial Manager Vic Todd introduced Guests of Honour Tommy Docherty and Club President Lord Pendry. In their introduction Vic briefly outlined Tommy’s career and explained that Lord Pendry was instrumental in arranging the function having been friends with Tommy for over 40 years. Lord Pendry then said a few words on one of the two auction prizes he kindly donated to the Club before handing over to Tommy.
Tommy then spoke for over 30 minutess about his career as a player and manager, in both international and club football, during which time the audience was spellbound by his stories. During the interval food was served from our newly refurbished kitchen for the first time, and without any hitches. Vic then auctioned the signed Man Utd ball and England shirt from the recent game vs Brazil that were donated by our President. These raised over £500 for the Club. Two Ramsgate shirts signed by Tommy were then auctioned for the Warren Schulz Testimonial fund raising over £100.
Tommy then went on to answer questions from the audience for well over an hour. The audience was thoroughly entertained throughout, and hands were still being raised when Vic had to announce “One more question please”. To close the evening Tommy signed autographs and posed for pictures until everyone was happy.
This was certainly a fantastic night at the Clubhouse and we thank both Lord Pendry and of course Tommy for making it such a hard act to follow.
