Ramsgate Academy made the most of their long 2.5 hour trip around the M25 near Uxbridge to play The Watford FC Development team based at the Harefield Academy, coming away with a convincing 4-2 victory thanks to two goals from captain Callum Weatherly and further goals from Semon Murphy and, with the last kick of the game, TJ Jadama.
Watford started the stronger keeping Ramsgate in their own half for the first 12 minutes. In that time Watford wasted many good opportunities to score with a very lively front line. The Rams grew in confidence and eventually broke the deadlock in the 24th minute when a good move down the left flank saw Weatherly coolly slot the ball home. With 5 minutes of the half remaining, slack defending cost Ramsgate a goal, making the score 1-1 into the interval.
In the second half Ramsgate were once again pegged back by the hosts front line, but great individual skill from sub Jack Hinkley (who had replaced Harvey Laws) set striker Semon Murphy up to make it 2-1 in the 51st minute with a delightful shot that the hosts' 'keeper could only admire. At this stage the Rams were starting to run the show with slick passing, and in the 65th minute Corey Hanson had a fierce shot parried by their 'keeper, then 10 minutes later Man of the Match Weatherly made it 3-1 after a thirteen-pass move by slotting the ball past the outcoming goalie. Just after this, oncoming striker Kyle Nichols (for Semon Murphy) struck what seemed to be an unstopable volley from just outside the 18 yard box, that somehow the 'keeper managed to tip over the bar. Once again slack defending nearly cost Ramsgate two points, when in the 85th minute they allowed the hornets back into the game to score a second. For the law few minutes the Rams were on the back foot but held firm, but with the last move of the game TJ Jadama strolled through the defence with a solo effort, and beating the 'keeper made the score 2-4 Ramsgate's favour.
Ramsgate: Charlie Cousins, Harvey Laws (Jack Hinkley), Jacob Mensah, Liam Perquin, Connor Enver, TJ Jadama, Leon Guess, Kye Jarvis (Josh Maher), Callum Weatherly, Se'mon Murphy (Kyle Nichols), Corey Hanson (Robbie Deacon).
Next Wednesday the Academy are at home to Barnet.
