Rams win at Salter's Lane
Youngsters bounce back in style
Ramsgate didn't take too long to put Saturday's disappointing start to their League campaign behind them, and in the opening minutes a curving ball from Tom Chapman on the right demanded quick feet from 'keeper Simon Overland to deny the strike. But it was in the 17th minute that the Rams broke the deadlock, when Jake Mackenzie's ball in from the right was parried away by Overland to Rory Smith, who fired in at the far post.
Five minutes later and Faversham centre-forward Liam King went one-on-one with ‘keeper Luke Watkins, and as he tried to go around the diving ‘keeper ended up on the ground, but the well-positioned ref had no hesitation in booking King for simulation. In the 35th minute right back Ryan Cooper tried a speculative long-range effort on the Rams’ goal, but it sailed well over the cross-bar. Four minutes later King tried to make amends, but his attempted equaliser from inside the area was also too high.
The Rams struck again three minutes before the interval when Smith combined with Adam Woollcott, before Alfie Paxman doubled the lead running in from the left and slotting the ball past Overland.
The Rams looked more comfortable than their hosts, who had won 5-0 at VCD on Saturday, and when the Reds were able to string their passing game together they caused the Lilywhites great problems. Seven minutes after the restart the tireless Paxman outpaced Cooper and almost extended the lead further, but his shot went just outside the post. Faversham were still relying on the long ball/quick counter, and managed to win a few corners with this approach. Just before the hour mark they almost converted from a corner, but Watkins intercepted well with some great handling. Minutes later and Paxman went close again, but his high-flying header was deemed offside.
In the 64th minute Paxman set the ball up for Chapman, but the latter’s shot beat Overland but rattled the upright. Faversham got a goal back through a well-worked effort from George Monger with just over 20 minutes to go, and although they thought they had equalised 5 minutes later when the Rams failed to clear a freekick, that was ruled offside. The Rams kept pressing and two minutes later Chapman squared the ball for Adam Woollcott running in to the area, but the shot was saved by Overland. In the 83rd minute Paxman was fouled twice as he ran through on the left, but the resulting freekick on the edge of the area was collected by Overland. A minute later and Smith tried a shot on the turn but it went over, while after another five minutes Smith centred for Chapman, but the latter’s shot was smothered by Overland. At the end of the match the Rams were pleased to leave Salter's Lane with some points for a change - especially all 3, which were fully deserved.
