Rams hit a wall against the Brickies in the Velocity Trophy

Tonight Ramsgate visited Sittingbourne looking for a place in the 2nd round of the Isthmian League Cup, and although they had more than their share of the play in the 1st half they succumbed to two 2nd half strikes from their hosts.

Although the Rams were looking to build on their 3-1 victory over Thamesmead on Saturday, they faced an additional challenge as regular ‘keeper Luke Watkins was unavailable owing to an injury picked up in that last match, along with other regulars Ollie Gray, Adam Woollcott and Alfie Paxman. So a number of youngsters got a start at Woodstock Park, along with former Folkestone and Hythe 'keeper Roddy Hayward drafted in for cover in-between the sticks, who had faced the Rams 3 seasons ago for the Cannons.

No goals in the first 45, although Hayward and the Brickies 'keeper, former Ramsgate youngster Harry Brooks, both had a few things to do. The Rams were forced to make a further change mid-half unfortunately, when Luke Wheatley had to be replaced.

The 2nd half started with the same end-to-end action as the 1st, however the Brickies found more impetus after a stunning 35 yard freekick from Tyrone Guthrie swerved over the wall and tucked under the crossbar in the 57th minute. The home side started to try more shots now, and Hayward pulled off some excellent saves. The Brickies extended their lead less than 10 minutes later when a low cross from the right got past the huddle at the near post and home skipper (and ex-Ram) Laurence Ball turned it in under pressure. Sittingbourne thought they had bagged a third with 5 minutes to go, when Hayward's quick reactions saw him block another volley, and although (another former Ram) Kane Rowland was following in to strike the 2nd ball he was clearly offside.

So, the depleted Rams exit the League Cup, and prepare themselves for their 5th away game in a row when they visit Carshalton on Saturday.

Attendance 104

Rams: Roddy Hayward, Jake Mackenzie, Jack Penny, George Crimmen, Luke Wheatley (Joe Kane), Jacob Mensah, Tom Chapman, Jake Munday, Rory Smith, Dan Lawrence (Billy Munday), TJ Jadama (Dan Keyte). Unused Subs: Jordan Bartlett, James King.
