Weakened Rams Struggle in 2nd Half
It turned out to be a tough opening day of the season for Ramsgate, who were missing several key players, as they were beaten by a Phoenix Sports team making their first League trip to Southwood.
The game got off to a slow start and although visiting ‘keeper Steve Phillips had to react quickly to deny Tom Chapman in the 10th minute, both Danny Young and Dajon Golding went close on 18 and 20 respectively before, on 25, a break on the left saw Golding centre for Frank Sawyer to slot home. As the half hour mark passed the Rams started to get more into the game and in the 34th minute Jake Mackenzie’s shot went outside the left upright. Two minutes later and Matt Adams couldn’t turn Alfie Paxman’s cross past Phillips, while on the counter Golding’s long-range effort sailed over the Rams’ bar. With five minutes to go before the break, Jack Penny’s ball from the left found Chapman, but his header was just wide. The Rams eventually equalised on 43 when Adam Woollcott, making his home league debut, smashed home from the edge of the area, after Alfie Paxman had once again caused havoc in the visitor’s defence.
Rams looked to be getting on top of an even 2nd half, with Adams heading just over in the 65th minute, but two quick fire goals from James Fitchett and Dojan Golding on 77 and 79 ensured that the visitors went home with the points, despite the Rams hitting the crossbar as the Phoenix ‘keeper back-pedalled into his own net in the 84th minute, with Chapman unable to connect cleanly with the rebounding ball in front of the goal.
