Rams 1 Hastings 2
Sussex coast raid on Kent's Royal Harbour
The inter-county coastal derby saw a fairly even battle between Kent's Ramsgate and Sussex side Hastings, although it was the visitors who took all 3 points.
Both sides had chances in the opening minute, and in the 6th minute Sam Cruttwell made an optimistic effort from the edge of the area but it was easily cleared by Jack Penny. In the 12th minute Billy Medlock outpaced the defence and after a sideways move only had 'keeper Luke Watkins to beat, which he did with confidence. The Rams started to pressure the United goal, but the defence and ‘keeper Josh Pelling played well to deny efforts from Tom Chapman, Alfie Paxman and Rory Smith. On the 20th minute Paxman was through on goal but clumsily brought down from behind giving the ref no option but to point to the spot - from which Chapman equalised.
In the second half the end-to-end football continued but in the 52nd minute Watkins had to come out to block a hastings attack, but the wall fell sideways and to Medlock’s feet, which the centre forward fired at the right hand upright, but the ball went off the inside of the post and into the goal. Straight from the restart Paxman was again flattened in the area but the referee ignored the claims for another spot kick, while 10 minutes later Rory Smith was brought down, but this time the ref blew up, but gave a freekick outside the area. Paxman floated the ball over the wall but Pelling anticipated well and parried the shot wide. The ball was collected by Adam Woollcott who put it back into the danger area where Smith headed goalwards, but again Pelling was up to the task and saved well. With 20 minutes to go Hastings had another chance when Ansu Janneh was picked out near the Rams’ area but he blasted well over the bar. The Rams continued to press but the damage was done and the points were Sussex-bound, leaving the Thanet side to plan for their visit to Hythe Town on Bank Holiday Monday.
