1st Team Pen Pictures 2014/15

Jeff Allen 19 year old right back who was with Dartford and also Leatherhead for a spell in 2013/14. Appeared briefly for the Rams 1st team and Under 21s but couldn’t settle and was released.
Dan Barrett – 17 year old defender who has worked his way through the Rams’ youth section and was a mainstay of the Under 18s last season as well as the Under 21s. Also reached the fringe of the 1st Team making his debut against League champions Peacehaven. Started out the 2014/15 with the No 2 shirt before departing for university in the northwest.
Oliver Beard – 18 year old defensive midfielder who played for Gillingham’s youth setup before moving to Dartford and then joining Dover Athletic’s Academy where, having featured in the pre-season matches for the Whites, was rewarded with a full-time contract. Joined the Rams for a three month loan in September to get more senior experience.
Aaron Beech – 24 year old defender who started out with Watford’s Youth and Reserves before injury curtailed his progress. Moved to Thanet in 2009 and spent a season on TOTS books, but relocated to Southwood in 2010/11 and proved to be very influential in midfield or defence. Didn’t feature in the squad in 2012/13 but re-joined the Rams for the last 2 months of last season. Signed for 2014/15 but injured pre-season.
Nick Blackman – 24 year old centre back who has played for a number of local sides, including Deal Town, and spent last season at Marsh Athletic. Impressed during pre-season trials and is currently on loan at Canterbury to get match time.
Stephen Butcher - 19 year old Dover-born defender who progressed from the Gills’ development squad, with 1st team appearances in both the League and FA Cup last season. Butch, who can play anywhere across the back four or in midfield, joined the Rams for a short-loan back in January as a replacement for Jack Parter, and although he joined Maidstone in summer (where he had also been on loan) when released by the Gills he has now re-joined the Rams on a permanent basis.
Ollie Canfer – 25 year old attacking midfielder who relocated to Thanet from Ipswich. Spent the last four seasons at Hadleigh United, helping them to the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division championship last season with 14 goals as a striker. Scored for the Rams on his debut against Canterbury City and made a handful of 1st team appearances before suffering an injury and subsequently released when he returned to Essex in October, where he is now with Brightlingsea in Ryman North.
Tom Chapman - 20 year old striker, ‘Chappers’ was a regular in the Rams’ Under 18s in 2011/12 and, after scoring a hat-trick on his debut for the Reserves early in that season, has been in the 1st team squad ever since.
Charlie Dickens – 17 year old defender from Ashford who signed for the Rams in March 2014, making his 1st team debut in the final game of the season. Developed by the Soccer Elite Football Academy and played regularly for Maidstone United’s Under 18s for the early part of last season. Currently on loan to Ashford to gain match time.
Chris Elliott – 22 year old left back from Sittingbourne who has signed for the Rams from Folkestone Invicta, scoring on his debut in the FA Cup. Joined Invicta from Canterbury during the summer of 2013 and soon established himself as a regular in the 1st team, all the way through to the play-off final. Previously with Norton Sports (later Woodstock Sports) and has become renowned for his set pieces. Took a break in November owing to work commitments but returned to the squad fully fit in January, scoring on his return in the Kent Senior Cup.
Ricky Gundry – 25 year old striker and golden boot winner who joins the Rams from Rochester where he was leading scorer. Has also had spells with Bromley and Erith & Belvedere and turned down Ryman football Chatham last season, opting to play with his mates at Rochester, but is now keen to play at a higher level.
Joe Hagan – 23 year old goalkeeper who was number 2 ‘keeper to Preston Edwards at Ebbsfleet United in 2010/11 and moved to Tonbridge Angels in March 2011 aged 18. Played in the pre-season friendlies for the Angels but subsequently signed for Fisher in the Kent League. Joe joined Rochester United in 2012/13, but left at the end of September 2014 and has since played for Corinthian.
Kane Harrington – 23 year old attacking right-back from Canterbury who started out with Gillingham’s juniors before a spell with Chatham and then Woking’s academy. A knee injury forced a break from football in 2009, but he returned to football in summer 2010 with Margate. Release in 2011 and joined Thamesmead, before spells with Whitstable, Herne Bay and Sittingbourne and again Margate as an ‘over-age’ player in their Under 21s, from whom he joined the Rams Under 21s this season, and after some strong performances has worked his way into the 1st team squad.
Daren Hawkes - 21 year old ‘keeper who was regular Youth and Reserve goalie with the Gills, and was called into the 1st team in 2010/11 when Lance Cronin was injured. Ended that season on a 3 month loan at Ebbsfleet where he helped them through the play-offs. Turned professional in 2011/12 and had loan spells with the Rams that season and in 2012/13, signing permanently for the last two months of the latter and last season.
Cameron Heffernan - 17 year old younger brother to Connor who made his mark in Maidstone’s Under 16s in 2012/13, and stepping up to senior football at Deal Town last season. Can play in midfield or defence.
Connor Heffernan – 22 year old midfielder who returned from 2 years in the Spanish 3rd Division in early 2014, and after training with Dover and a single appearance for Leatherhead, joined the Rams for the last couple of months of last season. Prior to his move to Spain Connor was one of the rising stars at Welling during 2010/11 and 2011/12. Rejoined the Rams at the start of 2014/15, and although featuring consistently (and scoring some excellent goals) near the start of the campaign, by December he was no longer featuring in the starting XI, so moved to Leatherhead in the hope of more regular football.
Tom Hickman – 32 year old attacking midfielder who, having broken into Dover’s 1st team as a teenager and played for the Rams in the Kent League days, as well as having spells with Margate and Dover again. Spent a couple of seasons with Faversham where he was skipper but decided to return to Southwood between 2011-13. Subsequently spent some more time with Faversham before suffering a knee injury, but is now fully fit again and has re-joined the Rams.
Dean Hill – 30 year old defender who was part of the Rams’ side that won promotion to the Ryman Premier and the Isthmian League Cup before moving to assist the rise of his home-town side Dover. Released by the Whites he had a brief spell at Maidstone and then at Margate in 2011/12, returned to the Rams for 2012/13 as Club Captain, but missed a lot of 2013/14 through injury. Stepped in as caretaker manager for 6 games at the end of February until Justin Luchford took charge, but took over as permanent manager from Luchford in May 2014.
Ossie Isichei – 18 year old pacey winger who graduated from Dover’s academy in the summer with a full-time contract, and who Chris Kinnear labelled Dover’s man of the match in the pre-season game v Chatham Town. Joined the Rams on loan to get more senior experience but couldn’t sustain a place and returned to Dover after a month.
Ira Jackson Jr – 17 year old striker who scored 40 goals in a season for the Gill’s youth team, and made his senior debut for home town team Ashford United as a 16 year old in October 2013 against Tunbridge Wells. Has also spent time as a youngster with Derby, Faversham and Herne Bay, and appeared for Ashford against the Rams in the recent pre-season friendly at Southwood in, scoring Ashford’s goal.
Junior James – 26 year old pacy striker who spent a number of years at Dulwich Hamlet before moving to Merstham during last season, and then returned to Champions Hill to play for Fisher, from whom he joins the Rams.
Colin Justin – striker who had three spells with Woodstock Sports, including becoming their top goalscorer, as well as some time at Lingfield last season. Appeared for Crockenhill just before Christmas but brought into the Rams’ side in 2015 by new manager Simon Halsey.
Jamie Kelly – 18 year old ‘keeper who progressed from Maidstone’s youth system, being picked up by Brentford as an Under 16 and playing for the west London side in the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland. Returned to the Stones and became established in their Under 18s and Reserves before signing for Margate (and making a 2nd half appearance at Southwood for them a couple of weeks ago).
Mitchell Knight – 19 year old striker who progressed through Ramsgate’s youth teams into the Reserves, although he did try his luck at Hartsdown at the end of last season. Rejoined the Rams for 2014/15 and has been impressing in the Under 21s, and has now been scoring for the 1st team as well.
Ben Laslett – 31 year old midfielder who joined the Rams in 2004 from Sittingbourne. Played in the back-to-back promotion winning sides but missed a season due to a hip injury, returning strongly for the 2007/08 Cup winning campaign and winning Players’ Player of the Year for 2009/10. Took over the captaincy for the 2010/11 season, and has continued to be a key part of the midfield ever since, as well covering in the defence, pushing through the 400 competitive appearance milestone last year.
Chris Lewis - 25 year old local player who was initially promoted to Margate’s first team at the start of the 2008/09 season but had only made one Kent Senior Cup substitute appearance to his name before a surprise recall in March 2011. Looked good in pre-season training for the Rams in 2011/12 but work commitments meant he did not sign. Has given it a go again this pre-season, and has again looked sharp. On loan to Canterbury.
Calum McGeehan - 24 year old Dover-born central defender who progressed from a midfielder with Canterbury City as a teenager to Ilford in Ryman 1 North before spells with Thamesmead, Horsham and then Sittingbourne. Moved to Herne Bay for the 2012/13 season under Simon Halsey, and subsequently played for him at Lordswood and Fisher. Joins the Rams from his second spell at Thamesmead following the appointment as Halsey as Ramsgate manager.
Tyrell Mitford – 17 year old striker from Deal, who joined the Rams on work experience from QPR in November. Tyrell made it into the Kent Under 15s and the QPR Academy whilst at Dover College, where he has been scoring regularly in QPR’s Under 18s. Recalled by QPR after a few weeks, but by then had already scored for the Rams against Whyteleafe.
Carl Munday – 25 year old local striker who has trialled for the Rams in the past, and has joined for the 2014/15 campaign from Canterbury City. Featured frequently during the first few months before work commitments saw him struggle to retain his place.
Macauley Murray – 20 year old midfielder, ‘Macca’ played for Gillingham from Under 9 to Under 16 before being released. Went on trial at Lincoln, but didn’t find it enjoyable and returned home. Helped Canterbury City win promotion to the Kent League in 2011/12 before joining the Rams for 2012/13 and became a first team regular. Played for the Rams until March 2014 when he decided to follow former 1st team coach Steve Nolan to Whitstable, but has returned to Southwood for 2014/15.
James Olver – 19 year old defender who progressed through the Rams’ youth section to become a regular in the academy side at Sandwich as well as the Rams’ Under 21s last season. Mainstay of the U21s, and frequently their skipper, as well as being on the fringe of the 1st XI.
Scott Punton – 25 year old who progressed from Dover’s youth to Reserves as a striker with a few 1st team appearances as well. Signed for Hythe Town as a 20 year old and scored for them at Southwood in a 1st Team pre-season friendly, and then again in a Reserve fixture, before moving to Lordswood. Trialled for the Rams as a striker in 2010/11 but didn’t sign, and subsequently moved to midfield before settling as a centre back, the position he played in for Deal Town last season.
Aaron Quain – 25 year old attacking midfielder who made his 1st team debut for Margate in the 2007 Boxing Day derby with the Rams, and remained at Hartsdown until 2009/10 when he moved to Faversham. Appeared pre-season in 2011 for the Rams in the left back position, but decided to re-sign for Faversham, yet finished the season with the Rams, where he stayed for the start of 2012/13. Has since played for Merstham and Tooting & Mitcham Wanderers, but living in Ramsgate again has now returned to Southwood.
Tom Ripley – 27 year old centre back from Ashford. Previously with Ashford Borough, and last season was Lydd Town’s captain where he picked up Players’ Player and Supporters’ Player of the season (as well as 2nd top goal scorer, from centre half).
Curtis Robinson – 25 year old defender / winger who is most comfortable in central or left positions, and who was part of the Rams’ U18 and Reserve teams before leaving for university, after which he spent a season with Dover Reserves before moving to Hartsdown Park. After 4 years he was one of the longest-standing players at the club, with over 100 appearances, but terms were eventually agreed for his return to the Rams in 2012/13, where he scored some tremendous goals from the wing, as well as some staunch defending at centre back.
Freeman Rogers – 19 year old defender who joined Faversham this season from the Dartford Academy and has shown great potential in the centre of their defence. Joins the Rams as cover for Stephen Butcher at right back.
Warren Schulz - 35 year old midfielder who joined Ramsgate from local football eleven years ago, establishing himself as captain following the Rams’ promotion to the Ryman League, a role he carried out for seven consecutive seasons. Likes to get forward and in 2009/10 was the Rams’ joint top scorer of league goals. Over 430 competitive appearances for the Rams so far, and hopefully many more to come.
Matt Sharman – 18 year old Canterbury-born ‘keeper who has proven himself in the Rams’ youth teams, as well as the Under 21s last season, and is now on the fringe of the 1stteam.
Nick Shaw - 25 year old ‘keeper who signed for Whitstable in 2011/12 from Kent League, Woodstock Sports, before moving to Deal Town last season. Joined the Rams for cover in-between the sticks just before Christmas 2013 and ended up making 17 appearances by the end of the campaign.
Jim Sherman - 25 year old attacking midfielder who was born in Hobart, Tasmania and played in friendlies for Port Vale and Scunthorpe in 2008 before returning to Australia and playing for Melbourne Knights. Moved to England in 2010 and spent some time on the Estuary side of the Island before joining the Rams’ Reserves in 2012/13 as a striker. Following solid performances and several goals he broke into the 1st Team squad, where he has remained ever since, taken over as captain for 2014/15.
Greg Skinner – 18 year old left-sided defender from Maidstone who progressed from Bearsted to the Welling United U18s and Reserves with the assistance of the Soccer Elite academy, making his debut for the Wings’ 1st team in their London Cup tie against Erith. Picked up the Man of the Match award in a game against Southampton’s academy side and also appeared against a Wales youth XI prior to joining the Rams, initially for defensive cover and to give him Ryman experience, ending up with nine 1st team appearances by the end of the season.
Toby Smith - 18 year old striker who had been developing his game at Dover Athletic before joining the Rams for 2013/14 after impressed during that pre-season with a goal against Ashford. Remained on the fringe of the 1st team last season chalking up 8 appearances.
Dan Stubbs - 25 year old attacking midfielder with an eye for goal who has spent time at Gillingham and also Margate, and was part of Maidstone’s promotion winning side from 2012/13. Subsequently moved to Cray Wanderers where he continued his scoring ways this season, and having been released has now joined the Rams.
Jamie Taylor - 28 year old attacking midfielder who joins the Rams from Fisher.
Joe Taylor – 23 year old striker who was called up to Margate’s 1st team in 2008/09, but after infrequent games joined the Rams near the end of the 2009/10 season and winning the club’s Young Player of the Year award for 2010/2011. Started 2012/13 at Southwood but was persuaded to join Sittingbourne, where he had two successful campaigns including a trial with Ostersunds KF in Sweden. Signed for Farnborough this season but joined Folkestone after being released, from who he returned to the Rams for a month-long loan until Christmas.
Adriano Varnier – 25 year old Australian/Italian ‘keeper who was born in Sydney and had a trial with Norwich in 2009 before joining FC Koper in Slovenia for 2009/10 and 2010/11. Returned to Australia for a season before joining Boavista in Portugal in 2012/13 and then coming to the UK and joining West Ham last season, with subsequent spells at Cheshunt and AFC Hornchurch.
Gary Vizzard 20 year old striker who picked up silverware in his youth career with Ramsgate several times before trying his luck at Hartsdown Park the last couple of years in their Under 21s and also on the fringe of the 1st team. Has already scored for the Rams’ Under 21s this season and has featured in the 1st team squad. Currently on loan to Deal Town to maintain match time.
Charlie Walsh – 21 year old striker striker who played at Chelsea and Dover Athletic as a youngster before the Deal Town Academy and then US college football. Returned in 2012 and had a spell with Deal before joining the Rams for 2012/13. Made a handful appearances, including a goal against Godalming in the FA Cup, but unable to sustain a regular 1st Team place so returned to Deal, from whom he has rejoined for 2014/15.
Luke Wheatley - 23 year old defender who came on a month’s loan from neighbours Margate in October 2009 but was recalled at the end of the initial term. Re-joined the Rams on a permanent basis 2 months before the end of that season and has grown in stature as part of the Rams’ defence since. Side-lined in October 2012 through a broken leg, and although he returned fit and strong for 2013/14 he suffered another break that September, leaving him on the sidelines for the rest of the season. Appeared for the U21s in October and hoping to be back to 1st team match fitness by December 2014.
Josh Woolley 18 year old striker who was with Maidstone’s youth and Under 21s last season (scoring against the Rams for the latter) but through the Soccer Elite academy stepped up to playing for Kent schoolboys and then in March made his England schoolboys debut in the 2-1 win over Wales in Wrexham. Joins the Rams to develop his career with more senior football.
