Whyteleafe 1-1 Ramsgate
Rams take a point at The 'Leafe
What an enthralling 90 minutes - The ‘Leafe came out really strongly from the start forcing the Rams on to the back foot, justifying their league position (5th currently in the Bostik South Eastern league). A 3rd minute attack down the ‘Leafe right saw a ball crossed into the area and Watkins was forced in to a great early save. From the throw out the Rams countered immediately with an excellent passing move on the artificial surface, the ball coming back to Billy Munday at the edge of the box and he gets a shot off just wide. The Rams were spurred on by their passing game and shots came in from Kyron Lightfoot, forcing a good save, and Tom Chapman’s efforts were also saved.
‘Leafe started to counter again at pace, forcing Wheatley into an error giving away a foul and receiving a yellow card. On the edge of the Rams’ box the freekick came in and after a little pinball the Rams cleared their lines. The Rams went back on the attack and a big penalty shout for handball was turned down by the referee. Again the ‘Leafe press forward at pace forcing a couple of goal line clearances. In the 36th minute we see the deadlock broken when a neat move by the ‘Leafe was finished off by O'Donoghue. The last action of the half saw the Rams awarded a free kick out their left hand side and Lightfoot stepped up and hit a great ball in for George Crimmen to rise and head home the equaliser. On the balance of play ‘Leafe shaded the first half but thanks to Watkins and the goal line clearances the Rams were level.
The start of the second half saw a Rams double substitution, with Wheatley & Lightfoot off for Liam Dickson and Jack Penny, and a slight change of formation with Penny playing out wide left. The 48th minute saw a run by Mackenzie down the right got down to the by-line and cut the ball back, but the ‘Leafe defender was in the right place to intercept. The action continued to ebb back and forth with chances being created by both sides. A 70th minute free kick from a dangerous position was lofted in by Penny, Crimmen rose to head but was adjudged to have fouled, which relieved the pressure the Rams had built up. Then it was the ‘Leafe’s turn to have a free kick danger for the Rams, but a great save again from Watkins and off they went again. The Rams made a sub late on in the 86th minute, with Lawford for Smith, and in the 89th the Rams held their breath after they gave away a free kick out on the left side. The Rams defend a very poor kick and eventually the ball ends with another Watkins save.
Final score 1 – 1, and in the end a deserved point for both sides who played out a very fair and entertaining match real end to end action.
