10 days left until we kick the season off and I’m very happy with how we are shaping up. We have taken into consideration the unavailability of some players and have managed the situation well, with everyone getting a good amount of minutes as we prepare for August 11th.
Last Saturday we had a very young side competing against a strong, experienced and direct Bowers and Pitsea. We took a lot of positives away from that defeat and it certainly was a great learning experience for the young lads. Not every team will want to play the same way we want too and it’s important the boys learn to deal with a direct, intimidating style and approach. I felt the longer the game went on the more we were able to get to grips with it and I would expect to see us deal with that situation better when the season begins.
Monday morning I had a call to say Balham had to pull out of Tuesday night’s fixture so was a mad rush to find an opponent because I felt a few lads needed more minutes in a game-type situation. Big thanks to New Romney for stepping in at the 12th hour. It was important we focused on correcting issues that I wasn’t happy about from the weekend and was pleased how we implemented them. Our template is coming together and the players are buying into that.
This weekend we face local rivals Margate at Hartsdown for our last pre-season fixture. Carrying a few knocks and with a couple of players unavailable we head into the game with a mix of first team/U23s, and again will be big challenge. I’ve given more chances to younger lads this pre-season and I’ve been extremely happy with how they done. Jordan Bartlett scored his first senior goal against Bowers and Pitsea and Harvey Laws has done fantastically in the last 2 fixtures against physically strong opposition, and they will feature again in this Saturday.
Look forward to seeing as many faces at Margate Saturday supporting the lads.
