Wednesday night we travelled to Bromley where we faced high flying Cray Wanderers. In total we had 5 players who were unavailable to play. Daren Hawkes came in at short notice to cover Luke Watkins. It proved to be a very difficult challenge for us and up until 45 minutes we more than handled the hosts until a combination of poor refereeing and marking took us into the break a goal down.
It was bitterly disappointing. Our game plan was being executed well and they hadn’t had a shot on target with us looking dangerous on the counter attack, but that minute before half time changed the whole complexion of the result.
Sloppy defending soon after the break meant we had a mountain to climb but we dug deep and an excellent finish by Rory as well as close efforts from DL and Alfie could’ve pulled us level, however it was not to be. Once we went down to 10 men against a side who can keep the ball as well as Cray do it was always going to be a tough, tough ask to get anything from the game.
A big thank you to all the fans that braved the cold weather at Bromley Wednesday evening - your support was amazing.
Tomorrow’s opponents, Herne Bay, find themselves in the top 10 and 6 points off the playoffs. I’m looking forward to seeing the response of the players after Wednesdays defeat, and a fixture against our local rivals should be the perfect motivation to put things right.
I am, as mentioned before, looking to introduce a bit more experience into the back 4 as the youngsters develop, and if things go to plan fans will see a new face at Southwood tomorrow!
