A fairly even 1st half saw both defences and ‘keepers in action from time to time, although Nick Blue was the first to fish the ball out of the net when Rory Smith headed the ball over him in the 37th minute, but the assistant flagged apparently for an offside (although photos of which show this not to be the case) so the goal didn’t stand. Unfortunately, 6 minutes later Jordan Carey saved at point blank range but Cray centre-forward Michael Power managed to stab the ball over Carey while the Rams’ ‘keeper was still on his knees. And the Rams’ woes doubled only two minutes later when winger Brandon Scott shot across the goal from the right, and whilst the ball evaded a stretching Carey it still managed to go inside the far post, giving Cray a 2 goal advantage at the interval.
After the break the Rams looked to have regained their composure, and after a number of early chances Alfie Paxman broke through into the box on 52 and slid the ball across to a charging Tom Chapman, whose strike on the run required Blue to pull off a great reaction save to turn the ball round the post. A minute later and Paxman outpaced Ben Mundele again to go one-on-one but unselfishly slotted the ball right to Smith who fired past Blue to get a goal back (above). Just after the hour Lea Dawson, who had been cautioned in the 1st half, received a straight red for a badly timed challenge on Liam Dickson, which left the Rams’ skipper on the deck. The Rams tried to make their advantage show, but Jay Leader cut out all the high balls for Cray, and the rest of the Cray defence knuckled down to their tasks. With 8 minutes to go Paxman outpaced Mundele yet again, and when inside the area bearing down on Blue he was floored by a clear shove in the back, but unseen by the referee and rather than the clear penalty in favour of the Rams gave the visitors a freekick and cautioned Paxman. With the score remaining at 2-1 in Cray’s favour the visitors returned to the top of the table while the Rams notched up an undeserved 5th defeat in a row.
