World Cup fever is right upon us. Currently writing these notes at work just 2 hours before kick off .....I’m still hoping to get home in time to witness history (and, if you're in Thanet, don't forget you can cheer the Three Lions on at Southwood!)
Whilst the rest of the country has been singing karaoke versions of the Skinner and Baddiel classic we’ve been working extremely hard. Saturday we faced newly promoted Punjab at a rearranged kick off time, and it was a good job it was changed. Temperatures at 11am hit 27c so was a real struggle for both sets of players. We got what we wanted out of the exercise and although we gained a couple of ‘niggling’ injuries, overall I left happy knowing the players got a good amount of minutes under their belt.
Summer signing Harry Stannard got a brace and really showed his quality in the final 3rd and that was certainly a big plus. We did look a bit ring rusty, but that is too be expected.
This Saturday our friendly away at Tooting and Mitcham has been cancelled. I was unaware the game itself wasn’t going to be played on the main pitch until Tuesday afternoon and after reviewing the squad at training that evening, where a couple of players have developed tight groins, I felt it necessary to protect the players.
The U23s are playing at Deal on Saturday in any case, so some of the younger members of the squad will now feature in that.
That then leads us into a busy week at Southwood. Tuesday night my ex-teammate Neil Smith is sending down a competitive Bromley side, and then we head into our Saturday fixture against Neil Cugley’s Folkestone Invicta.
Pre-season is well and truly in swing, and fortunately for us England fans so is the World Cup.
Dare I say it.....”it’s commming.....” – No, I’ll remain tight lipped for now.
Hope to see as many as possible there Tuesday.
