Tonight the Rams visited the Homelands Stadium for the first time in competitive football since the 2009/10 season, although there have been a couple of pre-season friendlies both there and at Southwood since.
There were a few hiccups beforehand, with Luke Wheatley arriving too late to make the starting eleven owing to car failure, and while the rain caused the ball to zip off the 3G surface the Rams had the majority of the play and effectively peppered the Ashford goal, but custodian George Kamrasi in-between the sticks appeared unassailable.
The Nuts & Bolts made more in-roads in the second half, and for a period put the Rams goal under extreme pressure, especially with the pacy runs from Max Watters and Tyrell Richardson-Brown, but Luke Watkins pulled off some first class saves to keep them at bay. In the 64th minute the deadlock was broken, when Matthew Day went through one-on-one with Watkins, and the goal was taken well. The action continued from end-to-end, and although the Rams started to create more chances again as the clock ran down, the equaliser failed to materialise.
Rams: Luke Watkins, Joe Kane, Jake Mackenzie, George Crimmen, Jack Penny (Luke Wheatley), Ollie Gray, Tom Chapman, Adam Woollcott, Rory Smith (Dan Keyte), Dan Lawrence (Jake Munday), Alfie Paxman. Unused Subs: Jacob Mensah, Billy Munday.
Next up for the Rams is a trip to National League South leaders Chelmsford City on Saturday (16 Sept) in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round.
