Corinthian-Casuals’ hopes of an automatic promotion place took a severe dent when they were held to a draw by a resurgent Ramsgate team.
The Casuals took an early lead in a fairly even 1st half when Max Oldham sneaked a 17th minute header in off the far post past Luke Watkins. Ramsgate gave Casuals’ ‘keeper Gareth Williams plenty to do but the visitors’ forward Harry Ottaway, who was dangerous throughout the match, burst through to make it 2 goals on 39.
In the 2nd half the Rams appeared to go up a gear and gave Williams and the Casuals’ defence even more to deal with, until Aaron Millbank scored from the spot after he had been fouled in the 56th minute (pictured above). The Casuals tried to kill the game off with a sustained period of pressure for about 5 minutes, but the Rams’ defence and Luke Watkins in particular dealt with all that was thrown at them and as the game moved into the final quarter it was the Rams who were making the most chances. The introduction of Rory Smith gained the Rams additional firepower and this was rewarded by Smith’s brilliant headed equaliser in the 81st minute.
A ding dong battle in the final minutes could have produced a winner for either side but both had to settle for the draw.
