A slippery surface at a damp Southwood saw early pressure from the Rams rewarded in the 20th minute, when a quickly taken throw to Alfie Paxman saw a ball in that was missed by Bradley Simms, but Billy Munday was on hand to head it in. Six minutes later Whyteleafe equalised when Luke Watkins was stranded in no man’s land and Lanre Azeez lobbed the Ramsgate ‘keeper. The Rams retook the lead in the 32nd minute after Rory Smith was brought down on the left wing, and Jake Mackenzie’s freekick found Tom Chapman, who controlled and then fired into the bottom corner.
In the interval there was an illness-enforced change of assistant, with a 15 minute delay before Whyteleafe could kick off and commence their fight back. The ‘Leafe started to apply a bit more pressure but the next real chance fell to the Rams, when six minutes after the restart good work by Smith and Munday teed up a chance for Dan Lawrence, but his shot went over. The Rams added a third in the 71st minute when Paxman’s free kick caught a deflection on its way into the net, and with TJ Jadama replacing Ollie Gray, shortly after Smith also put the ball in the net but it was adjudged offside. Whyteleafe switched to four up front as they chased the game. Jake Munday came on for the injured Lawrence, but a minute later Paxman was brought down in the area by Simms, and Chapman stepped up to concert from the spot. In the closing minutes academy right back Harvey Laws made his first team debut, in place of skipper Joe Kane,
Ramsgate: Luke Watkins, Joe Kane (Harvey Laws), Jake Mackenzie, George Crimmen, Jacob Mensah, Ollie Gray (Tj Jadama), Tom Chapman, Billy Munday, Rory Smith, Danny Lawrence (Jake Munday), Alfie Paxman. Unused Subs: Luke Wheatley, James King.
Next Saturday the Rams are on the road again, when they visit Molesey, followed by a trip to Bromley on Wednesday to face Cray Wanderers, before the next home game against Herne Bay on Saturday 2 December.
