Tuesday evening we faced Greenwich Borough in the Kent Senior Cup, but with the Bank Holiday schedule up and coming it was important I made some changes as well as give minutes to players that need them. Saying that there were many positives to take away from the game especially up against the experience and resources Greenwich have to offer. We made 4 changes and they had arguably their strongest side out, and to be 1-0 up at half-time and having made the opportunities we did was very encouraging. Although the result looked disappointing in the end, there were plenty of things I took from the match and our young players gained some vital experience.
What's important is, we as a group accept that this bunch of young players are extremely talented, but they must continue to want to improve.
Tuesday also saw the return of Dan Lawrence after injury. We aren't quite there yet with DL's fitness but it was pleasing to have him back on the pitch. His vision, creativity and experience will be invaluable to this young squad and his quality has been missed. We just keep our fingers crossed he's had no reaction. Also making his competitive debut was Dan Keyte. ‘Keytes’ has been with us all pre-season and had earned his spot within the squad and I look forward to working with him.
On Saturday afternoon we take on Hastings United, where Adam Hinshelwood has stepped in after Darren Hare resigned as manager, and he has had to re-build the squad somewhat as well. They've had a positive start to their season though, with 2 very good results against Corinthian-Casuals and Carshalton, so I've no doubt they'll be a very tough opponent at Southwood on Saturday.
Hope to see you there,
