Despite a cloud-less sky and brilliant sun, a biting northeasterly wind made it a very cold afternoon at Southwood, and although the Rams looked the livelier from the off, the strong gusts from the tailwind meant that even forward balls played along the ground sometimes outpaced the strikers.
In the 7th minute Joe Yeates managed to block a Rams’ strike that was beyond ‘keeper Liam Allen’s reach, however the ball was only half-cleared and Ollie Gray was on hand to give the Rams the lead. The Rams continued to test the Moles’ defence and ‘keeper, but the lead remained at 1-0 up to the interval.
In the second half the Moles looked much more resolute, and in the 51st minute slack defending allowed the ball to run across the Rams’ area and Ross Chalke was on hand to equalise. The half progressed with chances at either end, and 5 minutes after the scores were levelled Rory Smith gave way to Billy Munday. With 10 minutes to go Molesey made a change, and a minute later Rams’ new signing midfielder Kyron Lightfoot replaced Jack Penny as Lloyd Blackman changed the formation. The Moles made a further double change as the clock ran down but an extended period of late pressure by the Rams was rewarded when skipper Liam Dickson headed home the winner (pictured above) to give them their first 3 points of 2018.
