26 Dec: Rams 2 Hythe 2

6 months ago By Martin Able

Rams spike the Cannons but fail to deliver killer blow

The Rams got off to a lightning start, when in only the 2nd minute Aaron Millbank made a mark in his first start of the season when he pushed the ball wide to Tom Chapman, with Chapman whipping the ball in from the wing for Alfie Paxman to finish past Hythe ‘keeper Will Godmon. The Rams were still having the better chances, although a number of high balls from Hythe did test Luke Watkins a little, but in the 26th minute the Cannons equalised when a Dean Grant effort that appeared to be going wide caught the right hand post and went in past the outstretched Watkins. Paxman re-established the Rams' lead less than 7 minutes later, when in an almost identical move he ran in from the left to connect with Chapman’s cross from the right, firing past the stretching Ben Wilson and ‘keeper Godman (pictured), with the Rams taking the 2-1 lead into the break.

In the 2nd half the visitors employed a much more physical approach, and after only 3 minutes Dean Grant was allowed to run in from the left and along the edge of the area, before turning in to go one-on-one with Watkins and fire in the equaliser. The Rams kept pressing their fast, flowing attack, with Rory Smith going close as well as chances for Chapman and Paxman, and while the Rams had a shot blocked on the goal line (amidst shouts for a handball) Hythe appeared to be more reliant on a long ball approach for their counters. Millbank was replaced by Jake Munday on the hour-mark, then with 10 minutes to go Hythe’s Mitchell Chapman was shown a straight red for a challenge on George Crimmen that floored the defender. Although the visitors went down to 10 men manager Clive Cook reorganised and made a tactical change, and despite even more pressure from the Rams they could not press their advantage and Hythe hung on for a share of the points.

Ramsgate: Luke Watkins, Joe Kane, Jake Mackenzie, Liam Dickson, George Crimmen, Ollie Gray, Tom Chapman, Danny Lawrence, Aaron Millbank (Jake Munday), Rory Smith, Alfie Paxman. Unused Subs: Jack Penny, Jacob Mensah, Billy Munday, Lewis Mitchell.

Attendance 197

Next up for the Rams is another home game, when they welcome 6th place Greenwich Borough to Southwood on Saturday 30 December at 3pm.
