Barham brace denies Rams points (for the 3rd time this season)

Jack Barham proved yet again to be Ramsgate’s nemesis as today’s brace makes it 7 against the Rams this campaign (thanks to two for Phoenix Sports and a hat-trick on his debut for Greenwich in October). And for the third match in succession Ramsgate failed to hold onto a lead against a higher placed team, but were very unlucky not to come away with at least a share of the spoils.

The first half was a bit of a stalemate, although most of the chances created fell to the home team, with Alfie Paxman almost breaking the deadlock on 29, forcing a smart save from Borough’s highly vocal ‘keeper George Kamburasi.

Greenwich started to get more into the game after half time but it was the Rams who took the lead when Paxman blasted in from 25 yards in the 58th minute (pictured above – with Paxman far left watching his shot evading Kamburasi) after the visitors had failed to clear a corner. Shortly after Borough started to get in behind the Rams’ defence, and twin strikes by Barham in the 64th and 69th minutes, on each occasion the no 9 pouncing on second balls after Luke Watkins had made great saves, equalised and then gave the visitors the lead. The Rams had not given up, and the tireless Tom Chapman hit the post, with his cousin Rory Smith firing the rebound goalwards, but Big G Kamburasi smothered quickly. The Rams had a good claim for a penalty waved away, but at the other end Greenwich were awarded a spot kick when Luke Watkins was penalised, even though he clearly connected with the ball and not the man, and ended up with an injured shoulder. However although Borough failed to convert from the spot, hitting the left hand post, Watkins had dived the right way and further injured the shoulder, requiring a 1st team debut for Academy ‘keeper Charlie Cousins in the closing minutes.

Ramsgate: Luke Watkins (Charlie Cousins), Joe Kane Jake Mackenzie, Liam Dickson, George Crimmen, Ollie Gray, Tom Chapman, Billy Munday (Aaron Millbank), Rory Smith, Danny Lawrence, Alfie Paxman. Unused subs: Jack Penny, Jake Munday, Jacob Mensah.

Attendance 205

On New Year’s Day the Rams travel to Sittingbourne, weather permitting, after which they are in action at Southwood again next Saturday (6 January) when Shoreham make their first ever League visit.
