4 Aug: Ramsgate 3 Margate 3 - WW Martin Isle of Thanet Challenge Cup

4 months ago By Martin Able

Rams take out a 3-1 lead but Margate manage to draw level, with a stoppage-time equaliser

The Thanet Derby gives local football fans a chance to enjoy the Island's two senior sides battling for WW Martin's Thanet Challenge Cup. And though we can’t rule out a further Thanet Derby this campaign, as in addition to the FA Cup and Trophy and Kent FA cup ties, there is also the possibility of an Isthmian Cup encounter with Margate re-joining the Bostik League, tonight's game certainly gave the fans a chance to exercise their vocal chords.

It was the Rams who were first off the blocks, with new signing Rory Smith flicking the ball to the left to Tom Chapman just after a minute had passed, with his cousin driving the ball into the top corner.
The Rams’ second came about 10 minutes later, and on this occasion it was 18 year old Smith who found the back of the net.

In the 20th minute Margate were awarded a penalty, which was converted to narrow the gap to 2-1, but two minutes later and Alfie Paxman made it 3-1 to the Rams, which is how the score remained until the interval.

The second half saw Margate piling on the pressure, but it wasn’t until the 74th minute that Frannie Collin managed to slot one home for the visitors in a crowded area. The Rams kept pressing though, and it should have been game over with 5 minute to go when Paxman rounded visiting ‘keeper Lenny Pidgeley, but somehow his cross-goal shot on the turn went just outside the far post.

But it was not to be, and after the game went into stoppage time another scramble in the Rams’ goalmouth saw Margate grab a very late equaliser. Shortly after Margate’s centre-forward Alex Flisher appeared to turn awkwardly and injure his knee, and with play stopped and Flisher eventually stretchered off after a few minutes the ref blew up, and the sides decided to share the cup with honours even.

And although the cup was shared, sponsors WW Martin voted Ramsgate's Rory Smith as Man of the Match (pictured).

Ramsgate: Watkins, Mackenzie, Penny, Gray, Wheatley, Keyte, Chapman, Woollcott, Smith, Munday, Paxman. Subs: Crimmen, Crawford, Adams, Mensah, Jadama, Causer, Batchelor.

Next up for the Rams is the start of the League campaign next Saturday, 12 August, when they welcome Phoenix Sports to Southwood, 3 oclock kickoff.
