4 Jan: Blacky's Briefing

9 months ago By Martin Able

Lloyd looks back over the festive period, Luke Watkins' shoulder, and Shoreham on Saturday.

I hope and trust you all had a fabulous Xmas and a great New Year’s.

It’s been a very hectic and busy festive period where we’ve played 4 teams challenging for promotion. For those who have watched all those games I’m sure you’d agree we more than matched all our opponents, and in fact led in every game. Therefore to come out of those 4 ties with only 4 points is a little disappointing, but it’s certainly proved that we are more than capable of rubbing shoulders with the teams on higher budgets and higher up the league table.

I’ve heard and read a lot from other managers complaining about ‘this’ and ‘that’, and I’ve always refrained from making such comments. What I can say though is that luck evens itself out during the course of a season, and although we make our luck I do believe we are due a little. We’ve hit the woodwork 6 times in the last 4 games, had 3 absolute stonewall penalties not given, yet have been punished defensively for every small mistake we’ve made. I feel the players’ frustration and anger too, but our preparation and detail to get it right as a group will not stop. We can hold our heads extremely high over these last 10 days, not just because our performance levels have been good but also after personally speaking to many of the managers of our opponents, whom I respect, they left the field wondering how we never took 3pts.

A quick injury update. Luke Watkins is as I write this having physiotherapy on his shoulder to find out the extent of the damage. He has been to A&E and the X-ray showed no broken bones so it’s soft tissue damage so we’ll have to wait to see how long he’s out for. His injury presented a debut for young Charlie Cousins, who is yet another player to progress through our academy into first team duties. Congratulations Charlie.

On Saturday we welcome Shoreham to Southwood, which is a very important Bostik League game for both sides. I hope you can all get up to the game and I look forward to seeing you.

Cheers

Blacky
