With both sides making changes to their regular starting line ups, giving youth the opportunity to gain first team experience, we were treated to an excellent match with two early wonder goals for the Oystermen. The first, in the 7th minute, saw Charlie Smith volley past Matt Bone from the edge of the box, leaving the ‘keeper just to watch a very well struck shot finish in the top corner of the net. Then, just 4 minutes later, a strike from Elliot Baker after running on to a through ball, he lobbed Bone who was rooted to the spot to make it 0 - 2 to the visitors.
The Rams pressed, creating chances and winning many corners, but the Oystermen were stout in defence keeping the Rams at bay. It was the visitors who had the best of the first period and Bone in the Rams goal was forced in to action on numerous occasions making a couple of excellent saves including pushing a ‘well on’ target header up and over the bar, with the Rams going into the break 2 down.
The second half saw the Rams continuing to push forward but the Oystermen held firm, and a 61st minute triple substitution saw them further spurred on by the changes, the Rams forced some good saves from ‘keeper Eason in the Whitstable goal. The visitors kept the Rams at bay making sure it was them who that progressed to the next round.
