With four players travelling with the 1st Team, and three regulars returning from injury, Ramsgate lined up with the returning Billy Lewins and Dom Crawford in midfield, and saw 1st year Under 18s player Alfy Warren starting at centre back along with his 1st year Under 18 team mate LLewan Cambpell.
The two sides were evenly match for the first 20 minutes until a controversial penalty was awarded to Chatham and was finished well by the visitors. This was followed shortly after by a goal from ex-Ram Joe Halford, who finished with intent, while some 10 minutes later things got worse for the young side with Chatham getting a 3rd!
The second half started with the message ‘it’s not over just yet’ and Ramsgate came out with a fight, and with a formation change and the introduction of returning-from-injury Tijan Jadama, a 25 yard goal-bound shot by Brandon Adam took a slight deflection that left the Chatham ‘keeper no chance to make the score 1-3. The Rams were throwing everything forward and a 35 yard effort from Harvey Laws rattled the bar, and though Ramsgate pressured the visitors for the whole second half they couldn’t find the all-important goals needed against a very well drilled and physical Chatham side. In the last minute Chatham were awarded a 4th goal after Matthew Causer had cleared from the line - the goal given after the referee checked with the linesman who at the time was on the floor after a slip, so did well to see if the ball had crossed the line or not!
Best of luck to Chatham in the Quarter Finals, while the Under 23s are back in action at Southwood on Thursday (12 October) against Cray Wanderers, 745pm kickoff.
