11 May: Academy Trials

1 week ago By Martin Able

Could you be part of our Academy’s success?

The Ramsgate FC football academy, which runs at Southwood Stadium and the Baypoint Club, has only experienced defeat once in 3 years and are currently compete in the Tactic League featuring representative teams from Tottenham, Watford, Arsenal, West Ham, Barnet, and Sutton.

As well as success on the pitch the Academy has produced players to represent the Rams’ first team, most notably Jacob Mensah and TJ Jadama, who between them have made over 50 appearances this season and recently both making the Kent Messenger Kent Team of the Week.

The Academy is run in partnership with local sports company Generation Sports Academy (GSA), who manage several similar academies across Kent, and gives players aged from 16-19 the chance to study for a nationally recognised Level Three qualification whilst developing their football skills under the guidance of an expert team of coaches made up of ex-professionals and FA-licensed coaches.

Unlike school-based football programmes our academy is actually full time as the players train every day unless there is a fixture. The fixtures are played at stadiums and at pro-club training facilities, not school fields. Our highly experienced tutors have fewer classes to teach so can devote their entire time to the learners every day.

We also have an unrivalled pathway to semi-professional football with current Ramsgate FC 1st team manager Lloyd Blackman coaching the academy players daily.

Rams’ chairman Phil Fennell confirms “I could only have dreamt of something like this when it was time for me to leave school some 25 years ago, and the academy is an example of our commitment to the local young footballers in Thanet. Along with our close relationship with the Ramsgate FC Youth Section, the academy should benefit all those concerned with offering young men who love their sport the chance of achieving a BTEC National diploma and GCSE grades in a variety of subjects, and eventually working within the sports industry.”

Tom Hickman, GSA’s Academy Manager, added "GSA provides students with an excellent range of pathways, from pursuing semi-pro football contracts to full-time employment in the sports industry. At GSA we provide a unique environment that allows the boys to flourish under the expert guidance of highly qualified tutors and coaches. GSA offers players outstanding full-time football training. This comprehensive programme includes all aspects of football and physical development. The ultimate goal is to teach our players to be well rounded young men, who will leave the programme with aspirations to continue their life journey in the sports and fitness industry, and we at GSA are very much looking forward to continuing a long standing and successful partnership with Ramsgate FC.”
