The Academy travelled to southwest London on Monday to face Sutton United’s Academy, who play in a higher division than the Rams, for a League Cup tie in the stadium last visited by the 1st team in the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy five seasons ago (and made famous by the “pie-gate” incident in the FA Cup match against Arsenal).
The young Rams started the more brightly, encamped in their host’s half for the most of the first 45. Ramsgate took the lead in the 26 min, with a free kick awarded just outside the 18yd box, which was smartly bent around the wall by an in-form TJ Jadama (pictured above). Just before half-time the Rams should have doubled their lead when striker Corey Hanson was up-ended in the box, but penalty claims were waved away by the referee.
In the second half the Rams were pushed back deeper into their own half, before another blunder by the rookie ref allowed the ‘amber & chocolates’ to equalise when clearly they had a player standing on the goal line in an offside position. After Sutton had equalised they seemed to raise their game, while many Ramsgate players appeared to be running on empty. In the 81st minute Ramsgate ‘keeper Hayden Holden kept the tie alive with a superb one-handed flick over the crossbar, but with the match tied at full-time penalties ensued, with the home side going through 5-4.
Ramsgate Squad: Hayden Holden, Gavin Rainer, Callum Weatherly, Jacob Mensah, Leon Guess, Liam Perquin, Josh Mayer, Kye Jarvis, TJ Jadama, Se’mon Murphy, Corey Hanson, Kyle Nichols, Robbie Deacon.
