The Under 24 team was a new initiative for Ramsgate, giving a further opportunity for senior players who have not made it into the semi-professional game, but still enjoy playing competitive football in the non-league pyramid (and with a chance for late developers to still progress to the 1st team).
For 2012/13 the team were entered in the Kent County Football League and the Kent FA Junior Cup, however these matches were to have been supplemented by a programme of midweek ‘friendly’ matches to ensure the team has sufficient games at an appropriate standard.
The plan was for the Under 24s to play their home games at the Southwood Stadium, where possible, and to be managed by Gary Beckett and Tim Hunt. Gary is a well known local manager who, having formed Sunday-side AFC Ramsgate after leaving university, became assistant manager of the re-formed Canterbury City for a spell (including a Kent Cup victory). After this he managed Saturday-side Lesters Elite, who went on to win the Canterbury & District Premier Division at the first attempt and went forward to be elected into the Kent County League as Broadstairs FC.
After several good results Tim Hunt had to resign owing to family commitments and, only a week later, Gary Beckett stepped down 2 days before a match without notice. Having claimed he had arranged the team this was found to be false and left the club picking up the first of several fines for failing to play fixtures. The team was eventually reassembled, albeit struggling to field a full XI, and after their exit from the Kent FA Junior Cup in the New Year the team folded, although some of the players have been taken into the Reserves’ squad.
