Joe Radford Reacts: Ashford Defeat / Delight at Second Half Performance / Bouncing Back Against Phoenix Sports
Ramsgate’s Goalkeeping Coach, Joe Radford, has reacted to Tuesday’s 4-2 defeat away to Ashford United in the Isthmian League.
“We set a plan out ahead of the game and we never executed it properly at all,” Joe said.
“I was disappointed at how deep we were playing at times - nobody was instructed to do so.”
“That was the basis of the half-time team talk really, trying to make sure the players understood not to play so deep.”
“If you think about the goals Ashford scored, we conceded a header from a second ball at a set piece, a penalty, a shot from range which should’ve been closed down and then an error from the goalkeeper for the fourth.”
“Every single one of them goals could’ve been avoided realistically.”
Despite the defeat, Joe has looked to the second half performance of Ramsgate as a key turning point in the game.
“I’m always a positive person and I like to find positives in any performance of ours, and against Ashford that was the second half.”
“I had, lets say a few words at half-time, and they responded in the second half. Credit to the players for that because at 3-0 down it’s easy to lose your head.”
“Nobody likes losing but this is very much a long-term project that we have in place here. Things won’t change overnight.”
"Some of the players need to prove themselves and showcase why they should be out on that pitch representing this club."
“But that second half performance alone has given me lots of confidence that we have a side capable of competing against the best teams in the league.”
“Now we have to bounce back on the weekend against Phoenix Sports and put this defeat behind us.”
