Joe Radford Reacts: Leatherhead Performance / Clean Sheets / Dan Carrington / Moving Forward / Whitehawk
Joe Radford has reacted to Tuesday night’s defeat at home to Leatherhead in the Velocity League Trophy.
“I thought it was a very good performance - we picked up where we left off on Saturday [against Phoenix].” Joe said.
“In terms of attacking play, we could’ve been better, but equally we probably should’ve scored a couple more with the chances we had.”
“Defensively, even though we conceded three goals, I thought we were quite solid at the back against a quick and skilful Leatherhead attack.”
The Rams went a goal down early on before recovering to earn a 2-1 lead at half-time, but ended up losing the match after conceding two late goals. Did Ramsgate deserve more?
“Absolutely! I, and the players are gutted about the result, especially in the manner of conceding two late goals.”
“For 75 minutes, we were on top. We started the game a little slow and let one in after just 2 minutes, but the players picked their heads up and performed excellently.”
“That said, the Leatherhead attack was rather impressive and they created big problems for our defenders.”
“It was a great match, but we played some of the best football we’ve played all season so I think it’s reasonable to feel hard done by.”
Ramsgate have kept just 1 clean sheet in their last 7 matches, and conceded 3 goals against Leatherhead. Is that a cause for concern?
“Conceding any goal is a cause for concern, however many it may be.” Joe said.
“The reality is, if your team is conceding in the two’s and three’s, that means you have to score three or four to get a point minimum. So of course, it has to be looked at and we need to work on that front too.”
What was the thinking behind Dan Carrington coming off with a quarter of an hour to go?
“I thought Dan gave us everything he had, it was a good performance after a little while out.”
“But, he took a knock and we had to take him off. We need to assess him further.”
“The sub wasn’t tactical or anything like that, he just had to come off.”
What was your view of Ramsgate’s two off-side goals?
“The first one, where it went straight in from the cross, I can understand that one actually. I think it was perfectly reasonable to rule it out as Kane was deemed to have interfered. I’d still like to see it back again though as I’m not too sure.”
“But the second one, I’ve got to be honest, I actually thought Miller was on side. I think he looked off because of how well he made the run, added with the fact the defender stood still.”
“Regardless, it was definitely a tight one! And that’s the type of luck we don’t seem to be getting this season.”
On moving forward…
“Hopefully we can turn things around, but I’m certainly optimistic, especially with the two most recent performances we’ve put in.”
“Whitehawk will provide another tough challenge and they’re having a good season so far, so it will be a difficult game. We’ll be up for it.”
