MATCH REPORT: Arundel FC 0-4 Ramsgate FC (FA Cup)

Ramsgate Football Club advanced into the second qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup following a 4-0 win against Arundel FC on Tuesday evening.

Miles Cornwell broke the deadlock inside 30 minutes, and Steve Smith doubled the advantage before the break.

Another two goals from S.Smith in the second half ensured The Rams would progress into the next round whilst taking home the match ball in the process.

Ashley Miller nearly gave Ramsgate the perfect start early on. Following some good work on the right wing between Paxman and S.Smith, the former lashed a dangerous cross into the box which was collected by Miller, but his snap shot at the front post was saved by Arundel keeper Dan Stevens.

Only a couple of minutes later, Rory Smith forced the keeper into another great save. The Rams kept the pressure on early doors and after a ricochet off the Arundel defender outside the 18-yard box, the ball fell directly into the path of R.Smith in a good position on the edge of the box. The attacking midfielder, with his weaker left-foot, directed his shot into the bottom left corner, but Stevens made a fingertip save to keep it level.

Arundel should lead inside 10 minutes. Jonny Steele’s unconvincing pass across the midfield was cut out by Arundel’s number 9, who found himself completely through on goal with only Will Godmon to beat, but the keeper produced a wonderful save to prevent what would have been a disastrous start. A golden opportunity missed for the home side.

Steele went close to goal a few minutes later with an audacious 30-yard volleyed effort which was just over the bar - not a bad attempt from that range.

KEY MOMENT: Ramsgate were finally able to find a breakthrough in the 27th minute. A long-throw in from Jack Paxman was flicked on at the front post by S.Smith into the path of Miles Cornwell who nodded home inside the box.

KEY MOMENT: S.Smith doubled the lead before the break with a glancing header at the front post - an excellent corner delivery from Matty Robinson who filled in at left-back on the day.

Switching the play from left to right with a great pass, Robinson picked out S.Smith inside the penalty area and he fired a low-driven shot on goal, whiskering past the post and wide.

KEY MOMENT: Rory Smith drove forward from midfield and was fouled, yet despite that he stayed up on his feet and picked out a perfect pass to S.Smith on the edge of the box, taking the defender out of the game in the process. S.Smith knocked the ball forward before smashing home to further increase the advantage.

S.Smith should probably have his hat-trick in the 68th minute, but failed to latch on to a defensive error and lack of miscommunication between the Arundel defender and goalkeeper. The striker was in behind and took a shot on goal but Dan Stevens was able to recover from the situation and make the save.

KEY MOMENT: After some excellent football on the left-wing between Robinson and Miller, the latter was able to set up a hat-trick for S.Smith, who rolled it past the keeper from close range, cementing the win and the match ball.

Miller should grab a fifth for Nick Davis’ side after Aaron Lamont pulled off a spectacular defence splitting pass over the top for the forward, who was through on goal. He asked for too much time and the Arundel defender was able to recover and make a last ditch tackle preventing him from testing the keeper.

Dan Carrington will be wondering how he didn’t extend the lead late on in the match. The midfielder found himself in a dangerous position inside the box and was played in by S.Smith on the wing. After cleverly turning the defender, he only had the keeper to beat, but Stevens made another great save.

Ashley Miller tested the keeper’s resolve in the last minute of the FA Cup tie and after wriggling his way around the defence and into a shooting position, he unleashed a powerful effort on goal, and to the surprise of absolutely nobody, the keeper produced another fine save. It was an impressive evening from Arundel goalkeeper, Dan Stevens.
