Ramsgate were held to a goalless draw away to Ashford United on Tuesday evening in the first matchday of the Velocity Trophy.

It meant a penalty shootout was required to determine a winner, and it was The Rams who came out on top to earn a bonus point.

FIRST-HALF:

Ashford’s Tom O’Connor had the first shot of the game in the 30th minute. His 20-yard volleyed effort failed to trouble keeper Will Godmon, flying over the bar.

Ashley Miller had Ramsgate’s best chance of the game in the 32nd minute having come on for the injured Matty Robinson. Jonny Steele pinged an inch perfect diagonal ball to Miller unmarked inside the box, but the forward scuffed his shot.

Miller went close a couple of minutes later. Paxman beat his man on the wing and whipped in a dangerous cross which was met by Carrington, but the midfielder was intercepted and after a scramble inside the box, the chance fell to Miller. His shot was straight at the keeper.

Paxman lined up a 25-yard blast at goal, and his effort whiskered past the post leaving the keeper stranded to the spot. It would have been a worldie of a goal had it gone in.

Hassan Ibrahyim had a dangerous shot on goal cleared by the head of Liam Friend as we neared the end of the first half.

In what looked like a certain goal for Ashford on the verge of half-time, Will Godmon pulled off a spectacular save to deny the home side - David Seaman esque.

From the save, Ramsgate countered immediately and Aaron Lamont found himself past the final defender and in on goal. Unselfishly, he tee’d up Rory Smith on the edge of the box, but Ashford were able to recover by then and the attacking midfielder was forced to have a shot outside the box, which was easily saved.

SECOND-HALF:

Just like in the first half, chances were hard to come by for either side and it took until the 72nd minute to have the first big chance at goal in the second half. Substitute Lee Prescott found Levi Gold in the box with his cross and his glancing header brushed past the post. The forward should score.

Godmon was called to action late on in the game saving Josh Wisson’s powerful strike in the box, ensuring the game would go to a penalty shootout.
