Match Report: Faversham Town FC 1-3 Ramsgate FC

Tom Chapman's spectacular double and Rory Smith's solo goal seal 3 points for Ramsgate

Faversham started the stronger of the two sides, and nearly scored after just 3 minutes of play. Liam King hit a volleyed effort on the edge of the box just wide. Sigh of relief.

Kane Rowland had a decent chance to give Ramsgate the lead in the 10th minute. Rory Smith delivered a great ball into a dangerous area in the box for Rowland to attack, and his headed effort was deflected over for a corner.

From the resulting corner, Smith delivered another spectacular pass, this time to George Crimmen, who headed a powerful effort on goal for Faversham keeper’ Will Godmon to make a wonderful save.

Ramsgate did score a couple of minutes later. Kane Rowland found himself in a great position inside the box and had a effort on goal from a tight angle, which was well saved by the goalkeeper but unfortunately for him and fortunately for us it fell straight into the path of Tom Chapman who couldn’t miss from close range.

Faversham equalised in the 17th minute thanks to a lovely solo goal from Ashley Miller. The winger burst down the left-wing before cutting inside and hitting a low-driven shot on goal from the edge of the 18-yard box. His powerful effort was out of reach for Luke Watkins.

Tom Chapman and Kane Rowland will be wondering how Ramsgate didn’t regain the lead in the 31st minute. Chapman picked up possession from a sloppy Faversham pass in the middle of the park, who drove forward before putting the ball over the top to Gil on the left-wing. The forward beat the full-back and delivered a lovely cross to the back post, where Chapman headed down into the path of Rowland, who’s shot from a yard out was somehow saved by the Faversham goalkeeper. Massive let off for the home side.

Rory Smith handed Ramsgate the lead once again in the 39th minute. After a good spell in possession and good link up play between Smith and Rowland, the attacking midfielder found some space on the edge of the box, beat his marker with skill and struck the ball with his weaker left foot into the back of the net. The Faversham keeper’ had no chance.

The Rams increased their advantage on the verge of half-time after a stunning goal from Tom Chapman. Ramsgate were awarded a corner and Rory Smith put in a low-cross at the front post which was cleared by the Faversham defender, but only into the path of Chapman on the edge of the box, who expertly struck the ball on the volley with his left-foot and into the back of the net. The winger made it look easy! Keeper’ had no hope.

The second half began slowly, with neither side creating many chances from open play.

Rory Smith went close to increasing the deficit after 65 minutes of action. The creative midfielder drove forward with the ball from the middle of the park and decided to spread the play with a pass out wide to Kane Rowland on the right. The striker had options inside the box and picked out a pass back to Smith, who took a touch to set himself and attempted a cute finish but a deflection from the defender meant it would whisker past the post.

Faversham very nearly pulled a goal back in the 88th minute. Michael Freiter found some space on the right-wing and delivered a powerful ball across the face of goal, but no Faversham player could react quick enough to the situation.

Verdict: Ramsgate started slowly but got into their element by the 10th minute and dominated the majority of the game from that point forward. The Rams scored 3 great goals thanks to Rory Smith and Tom Chapman, the latter bagging a brace in spectacular fashion. Faversham did manage a goal themselves but that was purely down to a lack of concentration and thankfully didn’t have a detrimental effect on Ramsgate. Best performance from the team in a while with the likes of Mikey Dalton and Gil Carvalho also putting in tremendous displays and deserving of a honourable mention today.
