Match Report: Gosport Borough 2 - 3 Ramsgate FC (FA Cup)
Although there was constant rain prior to the start the pitch was being watered and in patches represented a shallow paddling pool. The Rams certainly seemed buoyed for this one and started off brightly closing down Gosport and stopping them from playing cutting out numerous passes to their wingmen. The Rams pressed forward at pace on every occasion they could the 11th minute saw Rory Smith receive a forward ball out on the left he cut inside rounding a couple of defenders to fire a right foot shot low to the keepers right and into the back of the net putting the Rams one up.
Terrific action ensued with both sides making the most of the slippery conditions with Rams having the best of the action forcing Gosport into errors with their dogged tenacity, 32ns minute however much against the run of play Suraci popped up with an equaliser this certainly raised the Gosport tempo but the Rams defence held firm and the Rams hitting on the break. The 44th minute saw a cross coming in from the left from Rory Smith that arrived perfectly for Kyron Lightfoot to hit a sweet side foot volley across the despairing keeper to nestle into the back of the Gosport net (pictured 2nd from right, celebrating with team mate, with number 10 Smith joining) - half time Gosport 1 Ramsgate 2.
The second half saw the Rams come out forcing Gosport on to the back foot and creating many chances crosses coming in from both sides of the pitch but it was not until the 61st minute that the Rams were awarded a free kick just out side the box up stepped Kyron Lighfoot to hit an amazing free kick over the wall and off the underside of the crossbar with such power the ball was in the back of the net putting the travelling support into raptures. From the kick off the Rams were still celebrating and conceded a scrambled goal 63rd minute awarded to McAllister for Gosport. A tense 30 minutes followed with Gosport pressing and the Rams hitting on the break Millbank went through the Gosport keeper came charging out to meet him but Millbank evaded the challenge to be pulled back by Wakley just on the edge of the penalty area, resulting in Wakley receiving his marching orders as the last man. Lightfoot stepped up again to take the free kick although this time he attempt was foiled. With 10 men Gosport never looked like breaking down the Rams they held on to take their just reward of a place in the 3rd qualifying round.
If the Rams can continue in the same vain they will certainly be a force in this years FA cup, very entertaining football at pace and a strike force to be reckoned with. Great performances from all the team in this match but man of the match would have to go to Kyron Lightfoot not only for his brace but the amount of work that he got through up and down the pitch.
The Rams are on the Rampage and out of the 157 attendance at least a 3rd were Ramsgate supporters and they were certainly in good voice by the end of the game.
