MATCH REPORT: Hythe Town 0-1 Ramsgate FC

Ramsgate FC shot up to the top of the Velocity League table following a  1-0 victory against Hythe Town on Tuesday evening.

Ashley Miller’s converted penalty proved to be the difference between the two sides on the night.

Rory Smith tested the goalkeeper early on from 20-yards, but Ryan Nicholls was able to deal with his effort comfortably.

Not so long after, Jack Morrell beat his man on the left and delivered a pin-point cross to Smith unmarked inside the box but the midfielder headed agonisingly wide.

KEY MOMENT: Ramsgate endured a nice spell of possession but spotted an opening mid-way through the half. Some good link up play inside the penalty area between Miller and Smith released Ashley through on goal but he was brought down by the Hythe defender and The Rams were awarded a penalty. Miller stepped up to take and he had no trouble converting to put Ramsgate ahead.

Aaron Lamont sprayed a wonderful diagonal pass into the feet of Paxman on the right wing before the full-back delivered a low-cross into the box, missing everybody apart from Smith at the far post, but his shot on goal deflected wide.

Smith had the last chance of the half. He attempted to find the bottom right corner but his 25-yard strike brushed past the post, keeping the deficit to a minimum going into the break.

Paxman nearly caused Hythe goalkeeper Ryan Nicholls a problem early on in the second half. The defender beat his man on the right, charged inside and delivered a cross-shot but Nicholls was able to tip it over the bar to stop it finding the top corner.

Debutant Tom Roberts, who had come on for Jonathan Miles at half-time, was forced into action in the 66th minute. Hythe’s Ross Ibbertson was placed through on goal but Roberts was alert and quick off his line, putting a halt to the attack.

Miller nearly put the game to bed with less than a quarter of an hour to go, firing a volleyed effort on goal from inside the box, but the keeper did well to stop the shot.

Just a couple of minutes later, Hythe were awarded a controversial penalty for a suspected hand ball from Ollie Gray. But, the controversy didn’t matter as Tom Roberts kept his cool to save the spot kick, bailing the defender out. That said, Ollie can probably feel harshly done by!

Hythe had one last effort on goal late on, and this time Callum Adonis-Taylor smashed a volleyed effort from the edge of the 18-yard box but Tom Wynter was on hand to block the shot, keeping the lead in tact.
