Match Report: Luke Wheatley Scores on Testimonial Day
Luke Wheatley managed to get himself on the scoresheet on Saturday afternoon as the centre-back celebrated 10 years at Ramsgate Football Club.
Rams winger, Matty Robinson, opened the scoring on a sunny afternoon after some great link up play inside the 18-yard box.
The lead was doubled by Miles Cornwell after 25 minutes, continuing his good run of form in pre-season.
Tony Cornwell’s side led 2-0 at the break, and it could’ve been more if it wasn’t for Brett Mills. His acrobatic saves kept Wheatley’s side in the match.
Tony Cornwell made wholesale changes in the second half, as did Ollie Gray, and Mikey Dalton began where Ramsgate left off to put his side into a 3-0 lead.
Gil Carvalho scored on his return to the side just moments later and George Monger increased the advantage to five goals thereafter.
Despite that, Ollie Gray, his manager for the afternoon, demanded Wheatley and the rest of his teammates kept the pressure on.
In an audacious effort to score a goal, Luke Wheatley led the line of attack for the remainder of the half. The defender went agonisingly close to goal when he struck the post in the 72nd minute.
In face of the agony, the towering centre-half then had multiple penalty appeals turned down by the referee who he failed to fool!
Soon after, Wheatley burst through the Rams defence and scored from close range in the 84th minute. The Rams defence DEFINITELY attempted to put his run to a halt, but his skill and technical ability shone through!
In the last few moments of the game, a pair of goals from Paul Axon and Andy Hadden ensured a good ending to a great afternoon of football.
Ramsgate Football Club would like to thank all fans who attended this special afternoon to celebrate the career of our former captain Luke Wheatley.
