Match Report: Ramsgate 2-1 Whyteleafe FC
Ramsgate started the game extremely brightly, playing some great football out from the back early on.
The Rams’ fast start was rewarded with an early goal - Rory Smith the man to put the ball into the back of the net after 4 minutes. Kane Rowland escaped his man inside the box on the right, taking a shot from a relatively tight angle, but his shot was saved into the path of Mikey Dalton on the left-hand side. The central midfielder was able to tee up Smith inside the box to score from close range.
Nick Davis’ side doubled the deficit in the 9th minute, this time Kane Rowland finishing off an excellent team move. Tijan Jadama recovered the ball in the midfield, and burst forward before releasing Tom Chapman down the right. The winger beat his man with skill, cut inside on to his left and passed it across the box to Kane Rowland, who took his shot well to beat Whyteleafe goalkeeper Tyler McCarthy down low.
The visitors could’ve given themselves a way back into the game in the 20th minute if it wasn’t for some excellent defending from Rob Saunders. The Rams defence was cut out following a ball over the top and Whyteleafe’s Andre McCollin must’ve thought he was going to be through on goal, but full-back Rob Saunders was able to track back and catch his man to snuff out the danger.
Whyteleafe DID halve the deficit 5 minutes later through a massive moment of misfortune. Charlie Dickens attempted a long ball over the top to the right, but his pass was cut out immediately by Marvin Armstrong, and with Luke Watkins rushing off his line, the forward remained composed and set up teammate Andre McCollin inside the box for an easy finish.
Ramsgate nearly increased their advantage in the 41st minute, Kane Rowland being denied by the post! Chapman surged down the left-wing and delivered a perfect pass to the feet of Gil Carvalho in the box, who could’ve shot but decided not to be greedy and smartly made a pass to Kane Rowland in a better position. Unfortunately for him, and for Ramsgate supporters, his left-footed shot was kept out by the post.
HT: Ramsgate FC 2-1 Whyteleafe FC
It was a relatively quiet second half for both teams, neither side creating any major clear cut chances.
The best chance of the second half fell to Gil Carvalho in the 74th minute. Rory Smith picked up possession in the midfield, carried the ball forward and played the winger in on goal, but he flailed his effort over the bar.
Whyteleafe sustained the pressure on in their search for an equaliser in the final minutes of the game, but it wouldn’t beckon.
FT: Ramsgate FC 2-1 Whyteleafe FC
Verdict: Ramsgate began the game in spectacular fashion, playing some of their best football this season in the opening 20 minutes. Whyteleafe’s goal was extremely lucky and undeserved, and it seemed to have a downwards effect on Ramsgate. The game became a rather scrappy affair, short of big chances, but The Rams held on to win on their last game of the Bostik League season.
