Match Report: Ramsgate FC 1-2 VCD Athletic
VCD Athletic Come From Behind to Sink Rams
It was a relatively slow start from both sides, though VCD nearly capitalised on a mistake early on from Luke Watkins. His attempt to throw the ball out to Chapman on the right-wing fell short and could’ve caught Ramsgate out after 8 minutes.
Just seconds later, Chapman went up the other end, carrying the ball forward from midfield and hit an ambitious effort from outside the box with his weaker left-foot, failing to trouble the VCD shot stopper. That said, it was a sign of better things to come.
VCD’s Dominic Odusanya struck the post in the 21st minute, who was able to run through on goal from the half-way line before striking a thumping shot from the edge of the box, beating Watkins but not the post. Massive let off for Ramsgate.
VCD Athletic kept up the pressure towards the end of the first-half, and had a couple of chances to take the lead, but The Rams held on until the break.
HT: Ramsgate 0-0 VCD Athletic
Ramsgate came flying out of the blocks in the second half in search of a goal, setting a much better tempo compared to the first half.
Rory Smith took a punt from 25-yards after 50 minutes of play, his attempt going wide of the post, though that effort set the tone for Ramsgate in the second-half.
Tom Chapman went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock in the 58th minute, his headed effort inside the box just going over the bar. Gil Carvalho did exceptionally well to beat his man on the wing with a wonderful piece of trickery before floating in an inch perfect cross to Chapman, who unfortunately couldn’t give The Rams the lead.
Moments later in the 64th minute, Rory Smith DID break the deadlock, and Nick Davis’ side took a 1-0 lead. It was an outstandingly well worked goal, starting with TJ Jadama who’s excellent pass from the middle of the park found Carvalho in space on the right who was able to whip in a low-cross, missing the head of Chapman, and falling to the feet of Rory Smith who did the business to beat VCD keeper’ Matthew Funnell.
5 minutes later, Gil Carvalho nearly doubled the deficit after Smith’s defence splitting pass found the winger in the box, who’s deflected effort in the 70th minute whiskered past the post and out for a corner.
VCD managed to find an equaliser in the 81st minute thanks to Charlie Macdonald. It was an excellent finish from the striker at a tight angle, beating Watkins at his near post on the half-volley.
Only 2 minutes later, VCD found another goal courtesy of Ali Fuseini, who was left in space inside the Ramsgate box to fire the Vickers into the lead, in what was a must-win game for the away side.
In the space of 3 minutes, the tides had completely turned. VCD were on top and Ramsgate had no reply.
