MATCH REPORT: Ramsgate FC 2-2 Faversham (Rams win 5-3 on Penalties)

25/09/2019

Ramsgate recovered a 2-2 draw against Faversham Town at the Southwood Stadium on Tuesday night in the Velocity Trophy.

It meant a penalty shootout was required to determine a winner, and it was The Rams who came out on top to earn a bonus point.

FIRST-HALF:

Bode strided forward in midfield and picked out a pass to Rory Smith on the wing, who charged inside the box to unleash a shot, but it was a relatively straight-forward save for former Rams keeper Luke Watkins.

KEY MOMENT: Faversham took the lead after a quarter of an hour thanks to Jamie Maxted. His low-driven shot inside the box passed everyone inside the box and beat young Ram keeper’ Harry Day.

Jack Paxman put a great delivery into the box which was dummied by R.Smith into the path of Kane Rowland. The striker pulled off a shot but it was blocked. Paxman picked the ball up again but this time forced a great save from Watkins at a tight angle.

KEY MOMENT: Ramsgate got their equaliser before the close of the first-half. R.Smith put in a great corner at the near post which was flicked on by Kane Rowland to Tom Wynter and the defender headed home to grab his first of the season.

R.Smith should put The Rams into the lead! The attacking midfielder was picked out inside the box by Paxman on the right, but his effort on goal went over the bar from 3-yards.

SECOND-HALF:

Faversham nearly got themselves in a big mess when defender Donvieve Jones went close to putting the ball into his own net, instead hitting it on to the bar. Liam Friend was the first to react and had a shot on goal from 2-yards, but it was somehow kept out. Rowland was up next but his shot was also kept out off the line.

Aaron Lamont decided to have a go from 30-yards and his effort agonisingly whiskered past the post, leaving Watkins stranded to the spot.

KEY MOMENT: Despite The Rams being on top, the Lilywhites managed to put themselves ahead late on in the 83rd minute. Thomas Barton initially hit the post with his cross-shot outside the box, before falling into the path of Michael Freiter and he finished superbly.

Just as the game drew to a close, Watkins was able to keep out a powerful effort on goal from Rowland inside the box, parrying it out for a corner.

KEY MOMENT: From the resulting corner, Tom Wynter was in the right place at the right time to equalise for the second time after an initial scrap inside the box to ensure a point at the very least.

In the last minute of additional time, Ashley Miller struck an effort on to the post and The Rams very nearly took all three points on the night. A penalty shootout required.
