MATCH REPORT: Ramsgate Snatch Last-Gasp 3-2 Victory in Breathtaking Fashion to Crush Hearts of East Grinstead
Ramsgate Football Club snatched a last-gasp victory away to East Grinstead in spectacular fashion on Saturday afternoon.
Mitford had put The Rams ahead early on but Grinstead pulled it back to lead 2-1 at the break.
But, Mitford’s converted penalty late on dealt the hosts a hammer blow and matters went from bad to worse in stoppage time when Miller ran through on goal and calmly finished into the back of the net to earn a crucial three points.
The result means Ramsgate have extended their lead on 20th placed East Grinstead to 8 points.
New signings Harrison Pont and Aaron Simpson both made debuts, whilst Phil Starkey, Toby Bancroft and Jude Arthurs all returned to action this afternoon after they were cup-tied midweek.
Kane Rowland came back into the side after he was rested and used sparingly on Tuesday against Ebbsfleet.
Matty Robinson took up a place on the bench following his return from injury and Charlie Meade earned a place in the matchday squad.
Ollie Gray (hamstring), Rob Saunders (hamstring) and Tom Chapman (wrist) were all absent through injury.
STARTING XI: Burns, Pont, Starkey, Thomas, Simpson, Norman, Bancroft, Arthurs, Rowland (OFF 78’), Miller (GOAL 94’), Mitford (GOAL 12’ 82’)
SUBS: M.Turner, Treadwell, Haidary, Robinson (ON 78’), Meade
The Rams keeper was called into action straight away as Grinstead’s Daniel Thompson raced through on goal only to be stopped in his tracks by an onrushing Burns.
Mitford put Ramsgate ahead shortly after as the hosts failed to clear the danger inside the penalty area. Rowland managed to get a shot off which was parried into the path of Mitford to tap home from close range.
Grinstead’s Gil Carvalho, who is a former Ram, equalised for the hosts just five minutes later as Shawnikki Clement-Peter floated an inch perfect cross to the forward at the back post.
Didi Castanho then fired his side into the lead before the close of the half and gave Longhurst’s side an uphill battle to climb heading into the second-half.
Things didn’t quite go to plan for Ramsgate early on in the second-half, but it was clear East Grinstead had taken their foot off the gas in order to protect their lead, making it tough to break them down.
However, The Rams did get the much needed breakthrough in the 82nd minute as Miller was brought down to earn a penalty which Mitford had no issue converting. Game on.
East Grinstead had no choice but to go for it late on in what was a must-win game for the home side, but that proved to backfire as one last counter-attack from Ramsgate, led by Mitford and Miller, dealt the killer blow in the 94th minute. Miller was threaded through one-on-one with Benjamin Dudzinski and he remained composed to chip it over the keeper in breathtaking fashion.
A game of massive significance - three points - job done.
