Match Report: Steyning Town FC 1-4 Ramsgate FC
Ramsgate FC advanced into the first round of qualifying in the FA Cup following a 4-1 victory over Steyning Town Community FC on Saturday afternoon.
George Monger opened the scoring for The Rams before a moment of brilliance from Steve Smith doubled the deficit towards the end of the first-half.
Normal service was resumed in the second-half, and Steve Smith bagged himself a brace to put Nick Davis’ side in the driving seat.
Kane Rowland, after being on the pitch for a mere 4 minutes, cemented the victory with a tap-in, but Steyning managed to grab themselves a consolation goal in the final moments of the match.
Aaron Lamont went close to opening the scoring in the 12th minute. Rory Smith intercepted the play in midfield and smartly drove forward with the ball before slipping in Chapman on the right-wing. The forward returned the favour with an intelligent pass back to Rory on the edge of the box and the midfielder put it on a plate for Lamont, who’s attempt on goal was straight at the goalkeeper.
Steve Smith, whose goal was ruled out against Chichester on Saturday rather controversially, had another goal ruled out for off-side. Jack Paxman, who returned from a rib injury this afternoon, played a spectacular diagonal pass into Smith and the striker headed the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the box. But, the flag was up quickly and celebrations were short-lived.
Ramsgate took the lead mid-way through the first-half thanks to George Monger. His deflected free-kick troubled the keeper and gave The Rams the breakthrough that was needed.
Out of absolutely nowhere, Steve Smith struck an excellent effort on goal from the corner of the 18-yard box, beat the keeper effortlessly and stormed The Rams into a two nil lead at the break.
That said, it should have probably been three. After some wonderful build-up play between Jack Morrell and Tom Chapman on the left, the latter fired a low-cross into a dangerous area in the box which was met by Carrington, and he outsmarted the defender with a cheeky backheel into the path of Morrell. The full-back hit a powerful low driven shot on goal but the Steyning keeper’ did extremely well to get down low and make the save.

Ramsgate approached the second-half in a similar way to the first - dominating possession and being on top for most parts. That was reflective immediately.
S.Smith nearly had his second in the 47th minute. Morrell delivered a pin-point cross into the back post and whilst Smith’s headed effort beat the keeper, Steyning defender Ryan Timms somehow managed to make a last ditch clearance off the line to the agony of Smith.
As we approached the hour mark, Aaron Lamont had the chance to put the game to bed when he was put through on goal by Rory Smith. Aaron surged towards the goal and, despite having S.Smith alongside him for the simple tap-in, Lamont decided to go alone and the Steyning goalkeeper pulled off a great save.
S.Smith did get his brace in the end just a couple of minutes later. It was R.Smith who combined with the forward. Rory, after powering forward with the ball from midfield gave the ball to Steve and the former Whitstable striker produced another excellent finish outside the box, giving The Rams a three goal advantage.
Tom Chapman couldn’t believe his luck later on in the half after being denied what looked a certain goal. Lamont’s stunning diagonal ball into the box was met by the head of Tom, but his effort was magnificently saved onto the bar, and Kane Rowland, who had just come on, was unable to latch on to the rebounds.
Just 40 seconds later, Lamont was involved again, and after finding some space inside the box the midfielder put it on a plate for Kane Rowland, who tapped home from close-range. He had only been on for 4 minutes. That goal cemented the win.
However, in the dying moments of the game, Charlie Romain earnt a consolation goal, which effectively meant nothing.
