Match Report: VCD Athletic 2-2 Ramsgate FC

31/08/2019

Ramsgate come back from two goals down at half-time to earn a hard-fought point away to VCD Athletic on Saturday afternoon.

Kelvin Ogboe gave the home side the lead, before a Jack Paxman own goal doubled the deficit before the break.

However, a second-half recovery thanks to goals from substitute Kane Rowland and Steve Smith saved what would have been an underserved loss.

FIRST-HALF:

Tom Chapman earned a penalty inside 10 minutes when he was taken down in the box by Brad Simms. Steve Smith stepped up, but unfortunately his effort was spectacularly kept out by Tony Coxall, who got down low to the left corner to make the save.

Chapman then went close himself soon after. Ashley Miller played the winger in on goal with a lovely outside-the-boot pass, but Chapman’s shot was well kept out once again from the VCD keeper at his near post.

Miles Cornwell had an ambitious effort saved from 25-yards, but The Rams kept the pressure on and were well on top from the very start.

However, VCD caught Ramsgate napping on the counter, and Kelvin Ogboe was placed through on goal following a defence splitting pass by Alastair Gordon. The winger put the hosts into the lead in the 29th minute against the run of play.

Just a couple of minutes later, Nick Davis’ side were two goals down after a massive moment of misfortune. Liam Friend’s attempted clearance inside the box struck Jack Paxman and the ball found itself in the back of the net, doubling VCD’s advantage.

SECOND-HALF

Ramsgate started the second half in similar fashion to how they started the first - dominant and in search of goals.

Cornwell went close early on in the half with his headed effort from the corner - Aaron Lamont with the delivery.

Dan Carrington thought he halved the deficit and brought The Rams back into the game in the 52nd minute. A top-class cross from Chapman following some excellent hold up play on the wing was met by S.Smith, who’s acrobatic effort fell straight into the path of Carrington. The midfielder had no trouble putting the chance away, but the flag was already up after Smith was off-side in the build-up.

VCD striker Charlie Macdonald had a golden opportunity to put the game to bed at the hour mark. The striker was through on goal and only had Godmon to beat, but his effort on goal whiskered past the post to give Ramsgate a fighting chance.

Kane Rowland nearly pulled a goal back just three minutes after his introduction from the substitutes bench. The ball fell to the strikers feet inside the box, but the VCD keeper somehow kept out his shot and at that point, you just feel it isn’t going to be our day.

But, in the 79th minute, Rowland did give his side a lifeline, scoring from close range. Some excellent link up play on the right between R.Smith and Jack Paxman left the defenders for dead, and the latter fired a low-cross into the box. After some scraps inside the 6-yard area, the ball met Kane at the front post and he wasn’t missing from there! Game on.

In the 93rd minute, Steve Smith was able to make amends for his saved penalty earlier on in the first half, powering in a header to equalise - Rory Smith with the superb corner delivery.

Relief was evident inside the ground, and in all honesty, the draw was the least Ramsgate deserved on Saturday afternoon.
