MATCH REPORT: Young Rams Shine in 0-1 Defeat to VCD Athletic

Ramsgate suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to VCD Athletic this afternoon as Matt Longhurst took charge of his first match since his appointment on Monday.

Alex Gaggin’s second half strike ensured all three points for the visitors yet an impressive performance off the back of a 7-0 drubbing away to Sittingbourne won back the respect of Ramsgate supporters.

Longhurst made 6 changes to the side that faced the Brickies last weekend as Charlie Burns, Michael Turner, Tom Coyne, Sam Bangura, Ollie Gray and Farzad Haidary all came into the side, replacing Harry Brooks, Jack Paxman, Ben Binder, Joe Denny, Dan Carrington and Jude Arthurs (suspended).

STARTING XI: Burns, Turner (OFF 88’), Gray, Saunders, Coyne, Bangura (OFF 69’), Haidary OFF 66’), Bode, Miller, Bancroft, Rowland

SUBS: Roberts, Barrett (ON 88’), Miles, Mitford (ON 69’), Treadwell (ON 66’)

Chances were short to come by for both sides early on in the first-half but Rowland went close with a headed effort in the 22nd minute in what represented the first big chance of the match.

Rams debutant, Michael Turner, took on an ambitious shot from 35-yards - his effort just over the bar.

VCD defender Raphe Brown whiskered a header past the post and then Charlie MacDonald should’ve done much better with an attempt from 12-yards. It was a great delivery into the box from Charlie Simms, passing everybody inside the box and into the feet of MacDonald, but he put his shot wide and that was the last chance of the half.

Bode had a thumping effort from the edge of the 18-yard box parried out by goalkeeper Matt Funnell. Toby Bancroft picked up the rebounds and hit a low effort at a tight angle, which was once again saved by the keeper, this time into the path of Farzad Haidary. He took a strike at goal inside the box but his effort was scuffed and eventually drifted wide to the agony of supporters.

VCD’s Alex Gaggin opened the scoring against the run of play at the hour mark - a goal that could have easily been avoided. The Rams defence was caught out at the back and Gaggin was able to capitalise for the visitors. Ramsgate keeper Charlie Burns initially made an outstanding point-blank save from 3-yards but Gaggin pounced onto the loose ball and fired into the back of the net.

Saunders nearly equalised immediately after. The centre-half charged at Bancrofts cross from the right, but it had too much flight and went out of play.

Longhurst's side dominated in large spells for the rest of the game but a goal wouldn’t come and The Rams fell to a narrow 0-1 loss.

That didn’t tell the whole story though as a fresh-faced looking Ramsgate side put in a hard-fought display that showed signs of encouragement after a difficult few weeks, and the players deserve credit for their performances even in spite of defeat.
