Matt Longhurst Reacts - The Players Care and That is Important for our Season

Ramsgate boss Matt Longhurst has reacted to Saturday’s narrow 0-1 defeat to VCD Athletic.

“Considering the time we’ve had on the training ground, which is pretty much zero, the players have taken on board the information we’ve given them, which was really pleasing.”

“I was happy with the effort and desire my squad showcased but that should always be the minimum requirement anyway. Sometimes it can be lacking but certainly not on Saturday.”

“The boys showed their togetherness throughout and when we went a goal down they dug in until the end of the match.”

“From that side of things I was delighted with everything. However, I think it was clear that we lacked a little bit of quality all over at times and perhaps we weren’t decisive enough in the final third - end product can be improved.”

Would it be fair to say Ramsgate were unfortunate not to get anything out of the game?

“Absolutely, I’m in no doubt. I don’t think VCD would say any differently either to be honest.”

“Their goalkeeper had more crosses to deal with, we had more corners, more entries into the 18-yard box, the ball was in their half more than it was in ours, but ultimately we didn’t work their keeper enough to score a goal.”

“Our choice of pass, our choice of shot and decision-making in the final third was where we fell short against VCD and we need to improve that.”

“If you asked a neutral in the ground, or maybe even a rational VCD fan, they’d say Ramsgate were unfortunate to come away with nothing on the day

The goal that we conceded was against the run of play - what would you put it down to?

“Ollie [Gray] travelled with the ball and was under pressure. He should’ve played the ball forward but played it inside instead to the opposition. He was then brought out of position which meant Saunders had to come over, Coyne had to come across and they’ve ended up overloading our penalty area and scored.”

“It was just an individual error really, which he knows and accepts. Ollie is plenty experienced enough to hold his hands up to that mistake. It’s not like he made the only mistake in the match, he was just the unlucky one. Other than that I thought he was excellent at the back actually.”

It’s a disappointing result, but does the performance offer you encouragement heading into the second half of the campaign?

“Of course. If the players lacked a desire to do well or the intensity wasn’t there, I’d be worried. These lads care and that is important for our season. The only thing I can ask for going forward is that they keep this performance level up and add some quality to their play.”

“At the end of the day, the reality is that Ramsgate are 19th in the league table and VCD are 9th, but if you asked somebody with no knowledge of how this season has panned out, I don’t think they would predict Ramsgate are where they are off the back of Saturday’s match.”

“I need to say a massive well done to the two young lads who made their debut on Saturday. Tom Coyne and Farzad Haidary are both 17 yet put in a shift like that, I was really impressed. Sam Bangura also did really well.”

“Now we have to look forward to the next match against Hastings and fingers crossed we pick up a good result. It’ll be a tough test, that’s for sure.”
