Matt Longhurst Reacts to Cray Valley Defeat - "The Scoreline was Harsh but we Have to Defend Better and we Can't Make Excuses for that"
Matt Longhurst has reacted to Saturday's 5-3 defeat away to Cray Valley PM in the Isthmian League.
“I thought Cray Valley had the better first-half despite the fact we went one-nil up early on against the run of play. We struggled to get out of our own half and they dictated the play for large periods and then they scored just before the break."
“We just felt we needed to change something at the break to get more of a foothold on the match. To be honest, footballing wise, we were much better. But the defending in our box wasn’t good enough.”
“Cray’s second and third goals were both free headers inside the box and that just can’t keep happening. It’s been a little bit of an issue for us in recent weeks, memorably against Whyteleafe and Whitehawk, so it’s something we are looking at prior to Tuesday’s game against Burgess Hill.”
“I thought Henry Arnold was excellent when he came on, Mitch Chapman did ok and scored a goal. You could tell he hadn’t played a lot of football but we knew that. Then obviously Aaron Simpson was missing through illness which was frustrating.”
“The scoreline was a little bit harsh on us if I’m honest but we have to defend better and we can’t make excuses for that unfortunately.”
“Before I joined the club, we really struggled to score and create chances. Now we’re creating and scoring at a much better rate and that’s because of the way we play. Take Henry’s goal for example - it was exceptional football.”
“As an overall, everybody can see Ramsgate aren’t a million miles away from the teams challenging for the league and promotion.”
“As a group we need to be better defensively and that’s what we will work on from now until the end of the season.”
