Matt Longhurst: To get Beat 4-0 Midweek and then Earn a Hard-Fought Point Away to Whitstable in Difficult Conditions was Excellent

Ramsgate manager Matt Longhurst has reacted to Saturday’s 1-1 draw away to Whitstable in the Isthmian League.

“Throughout the first half I thought the players carried out the game plan really, really well on a very poor pitch.”

“You can’t really play too much fluid football on a surface like that but we had asked the players on Thursday to tactically understand certain movements that would allow us to move the ball forwards without it being just hopeful balls forward."

“We changed Tom Chapman’s position slightly, allowing him to get beyond Kane [Rowland], and obviously it was pleasing to see him get a goal from that position.”

“Henry [Arnold] had a very good debut and showed what he’s going to bring to the group in terms of another attacking threat. He’s somebody that understands the game and has been brought up on the type of football we want to play.”

“It was a difficult game for Ash [Miller] to get involved in with the lack of quality service given to him, influenced by the state of the pitch of course.”

“But overall I felt the lads carried out the instructions, work-rate and desire asked of them. We closed the gaps between the midfield, back four and the forwards which helped us a lot as a team.”

“In the first-half we played the conditions really well but in the second-half we ran out of steam a little bit. Plus we conceded early on in the second-half which was a bit of a blow to the players. Had we not conceded so early we could’ve played with less fear.”

“That, for me, was Kane [Rowland’s] best game under me, [Tom] Chapman came through another 80 minutes, Henry Arnold was a big plus, [James] Morrish dropped in at centre-halve and was excellent, Harry Norman and Jude Arthurs had to change the way they wanted to play, the full-backs were outstanding, as was [Phil] Starkey and the goalkeeper. So, it was a great performance all things considered.”

“Like I said to the players - to get beat 4-0 midweek and then earn a hard-fought point away to Whitstable in difficult conditions, it was excellent to see. Now it’s important we carry on moving forward as we are.”
