Ramsgate FC 0 - 3 Chipstead FC
Sam Bell’s 20-yard strike was the pick of the goals as Chipstead emerged 3-0 winners in The FA Cup Preliminary Round over Ramsgate in front of a capacity crowd at Southwood Stadium.
After a pretty even half which offered little to either side, Spencer Cripps gave the visitors the lead in stoppage time. The former Bromley player was quickest to react when Tom Collins’ freekick rattled the crossbar and tapped in from close range.
Two breakaway goals in four second half minutes killed the contest. Jack Beadle extended the lead in the 58th minute before Sam Bell fired a shot from outside the box that left Daly with no chance shortly after.
The Rams had their fair share of possession in the first half without ever really troubling Chips goalkeeper Oliver Pain. A weak Tom Chapman effort the only genuine shot on target. The Greens failed to offer little either in what was an uneventful start to the 2020/21 season, with Brannon Daly having little to do until saving well from Collins’ freekick, which he pushed on to the bar leading to the opening goal.
Daly saved well down to his right from Collins once again soon after the restart following a defensive lapse. The error had appeared to come as a wakeup call for Matt Longhurst’s men, who enjoyed a continued spell of possession for the next ten minutes, but lacked any killer instinct.
It was as Ramsgate grew into the game that disaster stuck, as Rob Kember’s men scored two sucker punches to put the 1st Round completely out of reach.
A late penalty was awarded for a clumsy challenge but Roman Campbell’s spot-kick was beaten away by Pain, who dived well to his right.
Things turned from bad to worse two minutes later for both Campbell and The Rams. The 21-year-old was carried off the pitch after picking up an injury which looks likely to rule the former Gillingham striker out for the rest of the season.
Campbell joins fellow forwards Ashley Miller and Rory Smith in the physio room, with Tom Chapman having made his first game back since his own injury. With the injury toll mounting Ramsgate have decided to call off Tuesday’s friendly at Fetcham Grove against Leatherhead.
The Rams will next be in action for their opening game of the Isthmian League season away at Chichester on Saturday before returning to Southwood Stadium on Saturday 26th September when we host Ashford United.
